My Hollywood Mogul Parents Disowned Me For Adopting a Baby 14 Years Ago — Then My Daughter Read Their Rejection Letter Aloud at Her Graduation Gala
The hallway outside the main auditorium pulsed with nervous energy. Students in their caps and gowns formed a ragged line, buzzing with anticipation. Proud parents clustered nearby, cameras at the ready.
I stood on the periphery, careful to stay out of Dean Pendelton’s line of sight, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I hadn’t seen Chloe since Victor’s green room ambush, and a sickening anxiety coiled in my gut. What had he convinced her to do?
Then, I saw her. Chloe emerged from the staging area, adjusting her valedictorian sash. She scanned the crowd, her eyes locking onto mine. For a split second, a silent message passed between us, an unreadable intensity in her gaze.
She broke away from the line, moving swiftly toward me. A teacher started to call out, but Chloe ignored her, her focus singular. She reached me, pulling me into a fierce, almost desperate embrace. Her arms tightened around me, a silent anchor in the chaos.
“Mom,” she whispered into my ear, her voice urgent, hushed. “Trust what happens next. Please. Just trust me.”
Her grip was firm, grounding. As she pulled away, I caught a glimpse of her hand, still tucked inside the folds of her robe. There were two distinct pieces of paper in her grasp. One was the thick, glossy contract Victor had offered, now folded into a smaller, sharper rectangle. The other was an older, cream-colored sheet, thin and crinkled with age. The outline of the Ellison Guild crest was unmistakable. The 2010 disownment letter.
My breath hitched. She had it. Maya’s secret, my hidden pain, was now in Chloe’s hands. A surge of both terror and fierce pride washed over me.
Before I could speak, a voice boomed nearby. “Chloe! Line up! You’re on in five!”
Chloe squeezed my hand one last time, her eyes resolute. “I love you,” she said, her voice clear now, before turning and gliding back into the line, her shoulders squared.
A few feet away, Gavin Cross, Victor’s senior PR strategist, was practically beaming into a small microphone, surrounded by a gaggle of news reporters. His voice carried, cutting through the general din.
“This is going to be big, folks,” Gavin announced, gesturing expansively at the packed auditorium doors. “Ellison Entertainment Guild is proud to announce that tonight’s St. Jude Academy graduation showcase is being livestreamed, in its entirety, to no fewer than thirty major entertainment news portals worldwide.”
He puffed out his chest, oblivious to the storm he was helping to brew. “We’re talking a global audience. A true industry event.”
My blood ran cold. Thirty networks. This wasn’t just a high school graduation anymore. This was a worldwide stage, orchestrated by Victor, for Victor. And Chloe, my brilliant, brave Chloe, was about to step onto it, holding not just her future, but our entire past, in her hands.
