Chapter 12: Epilogue — A Table for One

The green room backstage at St. Jude Academy was usually a whirlwind of excited students and harried teachers, but today it was a quiet, antiseptic box, cleared out for Victor Ellison’s exclusive use. The air smelled of fresh paint and suppressed anxiety.

I watched through a crack in the door as Victor sat opposite Chloe at a small, round table. He had a glass of sparkling water in front of him, but Chloe hadn’t touched hers. She sat perfectly still, her hands clasped in her lap, her valedictorian robe already draped over her shoulders.

Victor leaned forward, his voice a low, confident murmur. “Chloe, you are a remarkable young woman. Truly exceptional. Your talent is undeniable, and your future, limitless.”

He slid a glossy folder across the table. It was thick, substantial. My stomach tightened.

“This,” he continued, a practiced smile on his face, “is an opportunity for you to truly soar. A four-picture studio development contract through Ellison Entertainment Guild. Valued at one point two million dollars.”

Chloe’s eyes flickered down to the folder, but her expression remained unreadable. She didn’t gasp. She didn’t even blink.

“One point two million,” Victor repeated, emphasizing each word. “That’s not just money, Chloe. That’s a direct pathway to the top. Guaranteed studio backing, world-class representation, a public relations team dedicated to shaping your image.”

He paused, letting the numbers hang in the air, a tempting lure. Then, his tone shifted, becoming slightly colder, more insistent.

“There is, of course, a small matter of reciprocity.” He tapped the folder with a manicured finger. “Your valedictorian speech. We’ve prepared a draft that we feel perfectly captures the spirit of the occasion, while also acknowledging the vital role your family—the Ellison family—has played in your journey.”

He pushed a single sheet of paper, folded precisely, toward her. It was the same speech draft I had seen earlier.

“It’s crucial, Chloe,” he continued, his voice dropping to a near-whisper, “that you publicly distance yourself from… less stable influences. Your mother’s situation, a single-parent environment, a low-level talent coordinator’s salary… it doesn’t project the kind of image a talent like yours deserves.”

He spread his hands, a gesture of benevolent concern. “We want the world to see you as the product of prestige, of legacy. Not… hardship.”

Chloe picked up the contract. Her fingers were surprisingly steady. She flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning lines of legal jargon, her face betraying nothing. The silence stretched, thick and uncomfortable.

Victor watched her, a predator assessing his prey, confident he had laid the perfect trap. He believed this was about teenage ambition, about money and fame. He entirely failed to understand the loyalty that burned in Chloe’s heart, the deep, unshakeable devotion she held for me.

Slowly, deliberately, Chloe folded the thick contract into a neat square. She slid it into the inner pocket of her academic robe, next to the folded speech draft Victor had given her earlier.

“Thank you, Grandfather,” she said, her voice calm, devoid of any discernible emotion. “I understand.”

Victor’s smile returned, broader this time. He took it as a victory. I felt a knot of fear in my stomach. What exactly did she understand?
