Chapter 12: Solitude on Sunday

The cold had truly seeped into Sarah’s bones. She leaned against Thunder’s broad flank, finding meager warmth from his powerful body. The barn was still frigid, and the exhaustion was a heavy cloak, pulling her down. Her vision blurred at the edges, and her legs felt like lead.

She watched the entrance, desperate for a glimpse of Dan, for Lily’s safe return. But the swirling snow outside only showed vague shapes, mocking her hope.

A figure emerged from the whiteout, striding purposefully toward the barn. It wasn’t Dan. It was Clara.

She pushed open the heavy door with a triumphant smirk, a thick stack of papers clutched in her hand. Her eyes, sharp and cold, immediately fell on Sarah, slumped by Thunder’s stall.

“Well, well, Sarah Croft,” Clara sneered, her voice carrying a chilling edge of victory. “Looks like your strength has finally given out. Just in time.”

Sarah tried to stand, but her legs buckled. A wave of dizziness washed over her, and she crumpled to her knees in the deep snow that had drifted into the barn. The cold bit at her, a dizzying, suffocating pressure. Her chest felt tight, her breath shallow.

Clara strode closer, the rustle of her papers loud in the cold silence. “I have here, in my hand, the official eviction notice for these very pastures.” She fanned the papers, a cruel flourish. “As of this morning, thanks to the newly verified property lines, these lands belong to me. You and your wretched daughter are trespassing.”

Sarah’s head swam. The words barely registered through the fog of hypothermia. She could only manage a weak gasp.

“And as for you,” Clara continued, her voice dripping with malice, “you’re done here. I’ve seen better, hardier women than you last through a Montana winter. You’re soft. Just like this ranch will be once Dan loses everything.”

As Clara leaned forward, a dark, triumphant shadow looming over Sarah, something primal stirred in Thunder. The stallion had been observing, silent and still. But at Clara’s approach, at her cruel words, at Sarah’s collapsing form, he let out a guttural roar, a sound of pure, untamed fury that echoed through the barn.

With a sudden, explosive movement, Thunder lunged. He wasn’t charging Sarah, he was charging *Clara*. His massive red body exploded forward, a blur of muscle and rage.

Clara screamed, a high, piercing sound of shock and terror. She barely had time to flinch before Thunder’s powerful shoulder slammed into her. The papers scattered like confetti into the snow. Clara stumbled backward, losing her footing entirely. She fell hard into a snowbank, landing with a splash in a patch of thawed mud and icy water, her scream cut short by a choked gasp.

Thunder reared up, his front hooves pawing the air just inches from Clara’s face, a primal warning. His nostrils flared, his eyes wild and protective. He stood, a magnificent, terrifying shield between Sarah and her tormentor.

Sarah, though barely conscious, felt a surge of fierce pride, a last ember of strength. The wild stallion, who trusted few, had chosen her. He was protecting her.

Through the haze, she saw another figure burst into the barn, a whirlwind of snow and urgent motion. It was Dan. His face was a mask of grim determination, his rifle held loosely in one hand. His eyes, usually so stoic, were wide with alarm when he saw Sarah crumpled in the snow, and then narrowed with cold fury when he saw Clara, sprawled and dripping, under Thunder’s furious guard.

“Sarah!” Dan cried, dropping the rifle and rushing to her side. His strong hands were gentle as they touched her icy skin.

Clara struggled to push herself up, covered in mud and snow, her eyes wide with fear as Thunder snorted menacingly above her. “Kincaid, get that beast away from me!” she shrieked. “He attacked me! I’ll have him put down!”

Dan didn’t even glance at Clara. His entire focus was on Sarah, his face pale with concern. He scooped her up effortlessly, cradling her against his chest. Her head rested against his shoulder, and she could feel the powerful beat of his heart against her ear. It was a warmth, a steady rhythm, against the encroaching cold.

Thunder remained, a silent, menacing presence between Dan and the sputtering, furious Clara. He didn’t move until Dan was well past her, carrying Sarah toward the house.
