The studio lot was a ghost town by 11:15 PM. Most of the crew had vanished hours ago. Julian Pryce was at a high-profile studio dinner in Beverly Hills, miles away, blissfully unaware.

Leo, a bundle of nervous energy, met me at the service entrance to the main stage. He fidgeted, checking his watch every few seconds. “He’ll be back sometime after midnight,” he whispered, his eyes wide. “We don’t have long.”

He led me through the cavernous, darkened stage, past silent sets and shrouded equipment. Julian’s luxury trailer, a double-wide beast of polished chrome and tinted windows, sat nestled in a secluded alleyway behind the main production offices.

Leo used a keycard he’d “borrowed” from a production assistant. The door clicked open silently.

“It’s under the desk,” Leo whispered, pointing to a sleek, modern workstation built into one wall. “There’s a magnetic catch.”

I moved quickly, pulling open the hidden panel. Inside, a small, black external hard drive was nestled amongst some cables. I pulled it out, connecting it to a small, secure laptop I carried.

The hard drive glowed blue, whirring to life. Files and folders filled the screen. Days of footage, telemetry logs, audio recordings. I scrolled through them, searching for the date of Ethan’s accident: six months ago.

“There,” Leo breathed, pointing to a file labeled ‘Ethan_Harness_Audio_Raw.wav’. “That’s his body mic.”

I clicked it, my fingers steady despite the tremor in my chest. The trailer’s speakers filled with static, then Ethan’s voice, clear and professional, through his comms.

“Rigging team, I’m at 100 feet. Speed is good. Ready for descent on my mark.”

Then, a new voice. Julian’s. Irritated. “No, no, no. That’s too slow, Ethan. My character needs to look faster, more dynamic. This is an action sequence, not a slow-motion descent.”

Ethan’s voice again, a slight edge of concern. “Julian, we tested this speed. 100% is maximum safe velocity for this harness. Any faster, and the g-forces will put undue strain on the locking mechanism. It’s a risk.”

A scoff. Julian. “Risk? This is Hollywood, Ethan! We *create* risk. Bump it to 150%. Now.”

A pause. Then Ethan’s firm tone. “Negative, Julian. My protocol doesn’t allow for that. It compromises safety.”

What happened next sent a cold spike of dread through me. A distinct click. A whirring sound, louder, faster. The unmistakable sound of a manual override.

Then Julian’s triumphant voice, layered over the increasing speed of the rig. “See? Much better! That’s the intensity I’m looking for!”

Ethan’s sharp intake of breath. “Julian, no! You’ve manually overridden the safety council! The gear… it’s not rated for this!”

A terrible, grinding screech. The sound of metal failing. A sickening thud. Then silence. An abrupt, echoing silence broken only by the faint static of the recording.

My hands clenched, my knuckles white. Julian hadn’t just ordered it. He had manually overridden the system himself, bypassing every safety protocol, directly causing the catastrophic gear collapse that killed my brother.

Leo stood frozen beside me, his face pale, his breath hitched in his throat. He had heard it too. The undeniable proof. It wasn’t just negligence. It was cold, calculated murder.
