Chapter 10: The Echo of Triumph and Grief

My blood ran cold. I grabbed my purse, fumbling for my keys, then remembered my car was gone. Panic clawed at my throat. I tore down the stairs, out onto the street, desperately hailing a cab. The city lights blurred as we sped downtown, my eyes glued to the towering Lindell Logistics building.

Meanwhile, Toby’s small figure moved with surprising stealth through the dim, echoing parking structure. The air hung heavy with the smell of exhaust and damp concrete. Each crunch of his sneakers on the gravel echoed loudly. He’d remembered Julian’s parking spot number from the times I’d dropped Julian off. B-level, near the exit ramp.

He spotted the familiar black Land Rover, its dark windows reflecting the sparse overhead lights. Julian was always so careful, but sometimes, after a long night, he forgot the most obvious things.

Toby tugged at the driver’s side door handle. It opened with a soft click. Unlocked.

His heart thumped against his ribs. He slid into the opulent interior, the scent of leather and Julian’s cologne filling his nostrils. The dashboard was a confusing array of screens and buttons. He remembered Julian fumbling with a USB port once, complaining about his “work drive.”

His fingers explored the console, then the glove compartment. Nothing. He checked the side pockets of the doors.

Under the passenger seat, tucked almost out of sight, was a small, rugged external hard drive. It was dark gray, a Lindell Logistics logo etched faintly on its casing. This had to be it.

He snatched it, his triumph a hot, quick surge through his small body. He scrambled out of the SUV, pulling the door shut with a soft thud.

The hard drive clutched tightly in his hand, Toby began to run, his adrenaline pumping. The exit barrier was just ahead, a sliver of freedom.

Just as he neared the barrier, a sudden glare of headlights flooded the ramp. Julian’s car. Another black Land Rover, identical to the first, turned sharply into the garage entrance, its engine roaring. Julian, frantic after the gala and the frozen funds, was returning to his office, likely to try and salvage something. He was driving too fast, his attention clearly elsewhere.

Toby froze, caught in the blinding beam. He was directly in the car’s path.

Julian, seeing only a dark blur in his headlights, reacted too late. The tires squealed as he slammed on the brakes.

There was a sickening thud. A small, desperate cry.

The car shuddered to a halt. The hard drive flew from Toby’s hand, skittering across the grimy concrete.

Toby lay still, a crumpled heap near the exit barrier.

The taxi screeched to a halt at the garage entrance. I saw the aftermath, the flashing hazard lights, the still figure on the ground. My son.

Julian stumbled out of his car, his face pale, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He didn’t even see the hard drive. He didn’t see me. His eyes were fixed on Toby.

“Toby? My God, Toby!” he stammered, his voice raw with shock.

My legs moved on their own, a blur of motion. Every fiber of my being screamed for my son. The hard drive lay a few feet from Toby’s motionless body, a dark, silent testament to a child’s desperate courage. But nothing else mattered. Nothing.
