The darkness was absolute, thick and suffocating, punctuated only by the distant flashes of lightning illuminating the rain-lashed windows. The mansion, usually alive with soft light and the hum of unseen technology, was now a cavern of oppressive silence. My ears strained, trying to distinguish the sounds of the storm from what I knew was coming.

Then, faint at first, it began.

A high-pitched, almost imperceptible wail. It resonated deep within the walls, seemed to vibrate in the very air. It was the unmistakable sound of an infant crying. Tiny, helpless, agonizing. It echoed through the HVAC ductwork, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.

“What was that?” Arthur’s voice sliced through the darkness, sharp with alarm. He was close by, in the corridor.

“It’s just the wind, Arthur,” Evelyn snapped back, her voice tight, a tremor betraying her forced composure. “The storm is playing tricks.”

But it wasn’t the wind. The cries grew louder, more insistent, ricocheting through the ventilation shafts like a trapped spirit. It bounced off the polished marble, reverberated down the long, empty hallways, making it impossible to pinpoint its source. It sounded as though a baby was suffering somewhere within the vast, echoing house.

Julian, his voice cracking, whimpered from deeper within the house. “That’s… that’s her, isn’t it? The curse… it’s real.”

“Nonsense!” Arthur roared, though his bluster sounded thinner, his tone laced with a growing panic. “It’s the damn storm! A power surge must have damaged a speaker or something!” He barked orders into the darkness, but no one moved. The security team, usually so composed, seemed frozen, their flashlights darting wildly, their shadows dancing on the walls like tormented specters.

I clutched my blankets, feigning a fresh wave of terror. My breath hitched in my throat, a silent, internal prayer to Gideon. He had calibrated the transducers perfectly. The frequencies were designed to bypass adult hearing in a normal environment, but in the heightened tension of the dark, silent mansion, with the added anxiety, they pierced the very fabric of the Kensingtons’ minds.

The cries pulsed, seeming to grow in intensity, as if the unseen infant was suffering more with each passing second. It was a cruel, psychological torment, tapping into their deepest fears about the “family curse” they had used to justify their monstrous act. The sound burrowed into their ears, into their bones, making the opulent mansion feel like a tomb.

A crashing sound echoed from the direction of the main stairs. Marcus. “Something’s moving!” he yelled, his voice raw with fear.

The phantom wails intensified, a relentless torrent of sound. It was the sound of guilt, amplified and thrown back at them, echoing in the suffocating darkness of their crumbling empire.
