The phantom cries intensified, weaving through the pitch-black hallways like a spectral web. The Kensingtons were shouting now, their voices shrill with panic, their flashlights cutting frantic arcs through the gloom. I could hear Arthur’s attempts to regain control, but his commands were lost in the cacophony of the engineered wails and the rising wind.

Suddenly, a new sound cut through the terror. A low, rhythmic creaking. It seemed to emanate from the direction of the old nursery, a room Arthur had ordered sealed after my baby was taken.

*Creak… sway… creak… sway…*

It was the unmistakable sound of a rocking cradle. And it was moving. Violently.

“The nursery!” Julian screamed, his voice dissolving into a ragged sob. “It’s in the nursery! Oh my God, Father, it’s real!”

I could picture it: the antique wooden crib, swaying back and forth on its rockers, alone in the locked, darkened room. Gideon had activated the automated mechanism I’d pointed out to him, a relic from Julian’s own infancy that Arthur had kept for sentimental value, hidden behind a false wall. Now, it was a terrifying testament to a “curse” they believed they had invoked.

Arthur’s voice, usually so commanding, wavered. “It’s… it’s a draft! An earthquake tremor!” But the denials sounded hollow, even to his own ears. The phantom crying and the rocking cradle were too specific, too targeted.

Marcus, his bravado completely gone, crashed into something in the hallway. “We have to get out of here! This place is haunted!”

“Haunted by your sins, Arthur!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice thick with terror and an almost feral accusation. “This is what happens when you dabble with ancient omens for corporate gain!”

The accusations bounced off the walls, fueling their collective hysteria. The fear was palpable, a physical entity in the darkness. Julian, who had been my secret husband, who had promised me protection but ultimately caved to his father, was now a trembling mess. I heard him banging against a wall, his breathing ragged.

“Father! We have to open the vault!” Julian cried, his voice desperate. “The emergency power! The backup system! We need answers! Everything is in there, everything!”

Arthur snarled, a low, guttural sound. “The vault is secure, Julian! No one goes in there!”

“But what if it’s not power?” Julian pleaded, his voice cracking. “What if it’s the curse? What if the secrets… the *true* secrets… are in there, drawing it here?” His terror was a raw, exposed nerve. He didn’t just want power; he wanted to understand, to somehow appease whatever vengeful spirit he imagined was now tormenting them. He believed the mansion’s deepest, darkest secrets were linked to the supernatural occurrences, and the vault held those truths.

The rocking grew more frantic, the phantom cries reaching a crescendo that clawed at their sanity. Julian’s cries turned into a desperate plea.

“Please, Father! The master keycard! Just open it! Before it takes us all!”
