My Younger Sister Poisioned My Husband And Daughter Over A Secret Mafia Debt
The air in the living room felt heavy, charged with unspoken accusations. I stood by the fireplace, the ancestral clause clutched in my hand, its crisp paper a stark contrast to the betrayal it represented. Elena sat on the sofa, her posture rigid, her eyes darting around the room, avoiding my gaze. The subtle threats from earlier had given way to a palpable nervousness.
“We need to talk, Elena,” I began, my voice steady.
She sighed dramatically. “About what, Evie? Robert’s terrible financial decisions? My ‘overzealous’ attempts to keep this house afloat for you ungrateful lot?”
Her attempt at gaslighting felt hollow now, a desperate charade.
“It’s about this,” I said, stepping forward and laying the crumpled, aged document on the coffee table between us. I smoothed it out with a deliberate hand, pointing to the specific paragraph Daniel had highlighted.
Elena’s eyes scanned the text, her face paling with each word. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin ashen. Her hands trembled, then clenched into fists in her lap.
“What is this?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“This is our parents’ last will, Elena,” I stated, my voice devoid of warmth. “Specifically, the part about the house. The part you conveniently ‘forgot’.”
Her eyes snapped up, blazing with a mix of fear and fury. “This is old! It’s invalid! You can’t possibly think this means anything now!”
“It’s legally binding,” I countered, recalling my lawyer’s words. “If you fail to maintain family standards, or use this property for illegal activities, the deed reverts. To Robert and me.”
“Illegal activities?” she scoffed, though her voice cracked on the last word. “What illegal activities?”
“Money laundering for ‘The Collector’,” I listed, each word a hammer blow. “Allowing our home to be used as collateral for Robert’s illegal gambling debts, knowing that ‘The Collector’ intended to seize it.”
I watched her face crumble. The fight slowly drained from her, replaced by a raw, exposed panic. She knew I had her.
“And,” I continued, my voice lowering, “conspiring to poison Robert to ensure a ‘clean’ transfer. That’s a violation, Elena. A severe one.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but they felt like crocodile tears. “No! That’s not what happened! You don’t understand!”
She sprang to her feet, pacing frantically. “He was going to take everything, Evie! ‘The Collector’! He threatened me! He said if I didn’t get him the house, if I didn’t ‘deal with’ Robert, he would come after me, after my family! After *us*!”
“Our family?” I scoffed. “You put Lily in the hospital, Elena! Robert is still fighting for his life! You chose ‘The Collector’ over us!”
Elena stopped, turning to face me, tears now streaming down her face, her shoulders heaving. “He had me cornered! I owed him so much, Evie, years of bad investments, trying to make a name for myself, trying to live up to… to your shadow!”
She collapsed back onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands. “He told me to use the neurotoxin. He said it would look like an accident, a heart attack, anything quiet. He said he needed Robert out of the way for a ‘clean’ property seizure. To erase my debt.”
Her voice was muffled, thick with what sounded like genuine despair, but I couldn’t trust it. Every word she uttered was tinged with manipulation, even now.
“And Lily?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, the pain of her betrayal a physical ache in my chest. “Did ‘The Collector’ tell you to poison my ten-year-old daughter too?”
She lifted her head, her eyes wide, glistening with tears. “No! God, no, Evie! I swear! I never expected Lily to be home! School was supposed to keep her late that day! It was a mistake! A terrible, horrible mistake!”
Her desperate plea, the raw anguish on her face, almost swayed me. Almost. But the image of Lily, pale and lifeless on the rug, flickered in my mind, hardening my resolve. A mistake? Nearly killing a child was not a ‘mistake.’ It was a consequence of her choices.
“A mistake?” I echoed, my voice shaking with fury. “You used a potent neurotoxin in our home! You left it for Robert to consume! How could you not expect it to affect anyone else who came into contact with it?”
She recoiled, as if slapped. “I… I thought it would be contained. I thought Robert would be alone. I truly believed she wouldn’t be there.”
“You *hoped* she wouldn’t be there,” I corrected, my voice cold. “Just like you *hoped* Robert would simply ‘go to sleep’ and conveniently disappear, leaving you free from your debt and in control of this house.”
The silence that followed was suffocating. Elena’s sobs wracked her body, but I found no pity in my heart. The betrayal was too deep, the consequences too dire. Her confession, though forced by the contract clause, still left me questioning her sincerity. Was she truly remorseful, or was this just another performance? Another way to mitigate her punishment?
“What happens now?” she whimpered, looking up at me, her eyes red-rimmed.
“Now,” I said, picking up the ancestral clause, “you lose this house. And you face the consequences of your actions, Elena.”
I watched her carefully, searching for a flicker of genuine remorse, a sign that the sister I once knew was still buried beneath layers of greed and fear. But all I saw was fear, stark and consuming. She had gambled everything, and she had lost. The bitter taste of ‘winning’ filled my mouth. It was a hollow victory.
