My landlord threw a pair of heavy black MMA gloves onto my shoes and threatened to put me in the hospital right in front of my eight-year-old sister.
At midnight, the only sound in Samuel Carver’s small office was the quiet click of his keyboard. He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples, as he finalized the emergency filing response. The glowing screen cast a blue light across his face.
“Okay, Leo,” he said, turning the monitor slightly. “This is it. Your sworn statement, a detailed timeline, and Chloe Ramirez’s verified banking clearinghouse printout, officially attached as Exhibit A.”
The printout sat boldly on the digital file, a stark, irrefutable truth.
Carver then looked at me, his expression serious. “Now, you have the option to file a formal cross-complaint for civil harassment and illegal eviction threats against Marcus. Based on his false claims and the aggressive tactics, we could move to strip him of his rental license. It would send a clear message.”
I thought about Maya, safe in our small basement apartment, sleeping soundly. I thought about the raw grief in Marcus’s eyes just hours ago. My goal had never been to destroy him. It was to protect my sister, to secure our home, and to clear my name.
I shook my head firmly. “No, Mr. Carver. My only goal is to clear my name and ensure a stable home for Maya. Not to punish a man who was reacting out of financial panic.”
Carver looked at me, a flicker of something that looked like deep respect in his tired eyes. He nodded, then clicked a few more times, filing the response through the court’s electronic portal. It was done, just hours before the morning session.
