Chapter 11: Solitude on the Porch

By 8:30 PM that evening, the neighborhood had grown quiet. A clear night sky glittered with stars above Oak Street. Maya was sound asleep in her bedroom inside the basement apartment, her gentle breathing the only sound.

I stepped out onto the front porch steps alone, wearing my worn work jacket against the evening chill. I sat down on the cool painted wooden plank, a warm mug of tea steaming in my hands. The streetlights cast a soft glow on the empty street.

Across the driveway, the lights in Marcus’s upper living room burned dimly. I could see the outline of the older man sitting quietly at his desk, head bent. He was reading through his remaining gym financial files, the paper rustling softly. There was no trace of his former hostility, only a quiet, focused determination.

I looked down at my own clean, unbruised knuckles resting on my knees. The stillness of the suburban street settled around me.

Fighting was the easy choice I left behind years ago; standing still and letting the truth work took real courage.

My landlord threw a pair of heavy black MMA gloves onto my shoes and threatened to put me in the hospital right in front of my eight-year-old sister.
