My Surgeon Husband Insulted My Dress At His Hospital Gala And Told Me To Serve Drinks — So I Revealed I Bought His Entire Medical Network
The relief from Harlan’s discovery was short-lived. I was making calls to my lawyer, preparing to present the expired indemnification clause to the hospital’s ethics board, when the news hit.
My phone buzzed with an urgent alert. My lawyer, a stern woman named Ms. Davies, was on the line. “Clara, have you seen the medical journals this morning?”
“No, I was just—”
“Julian leaked a story,” she interrupted, her voice tight with suppressed anger. “Front page of ‘State Medical Quarterly.’ It claims you’re exhibiting signs of early-onset cognitive decline. Memory lapses, confusion, erratic behavior.”
My hand flew to my mouth. Cognitive decline? Dementia? It was a cruel, calculated lie.
“He’s filed for an emergency temporary conservatorship,” Ms. Davies continued. “He’s citing the article, and his alleged ‘concerns’ for your well-being, as grounds to take control of your 51% voting stock in Crestview Health Alliance.”
The audacity made my blood run cold. Julian wasn’t just trying to get his job back; he was trying to declare me mentally incompetent, to strip me of my agency, my mind. It was a vicious move, designed to discredit me entirely and seize my control of the hospital. He believed that by attacking my sanity, he could invalidate my decisions and regain his lost power.
A stack of legal documents arrived at the motel room an hour later, delivered by a solemn-faced courier. The conservatorship papers were thick, filled with medical jargon and legal precedents designed to paint me as unstable, incapable of managing my own affairs. It was a direct assault on my identity, my very self.
Harlan Gable, still at the motel, stared at the documents, his face a mask of disbelief. “He’s really going for it, isn’t he? Trying to make you disappear without a trace.”
I picked up the court order, my hands steady despite the anger simmering beneath my skin. Julian had underestimated me every step of the way. He thought I was just a quiet nurse, easily manipulated, easily broken. He thought I would crumble under his latest attack.
He was wrong.
