Chapter 15: Two Weeks Later

The conference room hummed with a quiet intensity. Ms. Davies, my lawyer, sat opposite me, her legal pads neatly stacked. Harlan Gable, a small smile playing on his lips, carefully unrolled a large, yellowed document across the polished table. It was the original signed paper charter from 2014, the one that established Crestview Health Alliance.

“This, ladies and gentlemen,” Harlan announced, his voice steady despite the significance, “is the smoking gun.”

He pointed to the “Administrative Indemnification Clause,” the very addendum he’d found in my contract. “As we discussed, this clause, stating that any executive involved in unapproved third-party financial transfers forfeits all corporate legal protections, was set to expire after ten years.”

He traced a finger to the date at the top of the charter. “January 15, 2014. The expiration was January 15, 2024. Today is January 19th.”

Ms. Davies leaned forward, her eyes gleaming. “So, Julian Ellison’s corporate shield effectively vanished four days ago. He is no longer indemnified by Crestview Health Alliance for any of his actions.”

Harlan nodded. “Precisely. Every dollar of that $3.2 million, every kickback, every fraudulent transaction he’s been involved in, now falls squarely on his shoulders. Personally. Criminally.”

He then reached into his jacket pocket and retrieved his small digital recorder. He placed it gently on the table. “And this,” he said, pressing play, “is a recording of Dr. Ellison, just last night, instructing Mr. Sibley to siphon $1.8 million from the pediatric research fund into an offshore account.”

Julian’s frantic, desperate voice filled the room, detailing the embezzlement, the flight plans, the offshore accounts. The raw evidence was undeniable.

I looked at Ms. Davies. “We have the original charter, the audit confirming the $3.2 million, Harlan’s recording of the attempted $1.8 million transfer, and the proof of my cognitive health.”

“And Sibley’s involvement is now directly tied to Julian’s instructions,” she added, reviewing notes. “This is no longer just a civil matter, Clara. This is federal fraud, embezzlement, and a clear pattern of abuse of power.”

I felt a surge of cold, focused resolve. “Good. Let’s make sure everyone knows.”
