The Elders’ Tribunal was held in the Hall of Reverence, a vast, echoing chamber typically reserved for solemn ceremonies. A long, polished table dominated the center, where High Elder Theron sat flanked by the other Elders, their faces unreadable masks of piety. Brother Matthias, imposing and stern, stood guard at the chamber doors, his presence a silent threat. Silas sat opposite us, a smug smirk playing on his lips, Lyra seated uncomfortably beside him, her gaze fixed on the floor. The air crackled with unspoken tension.

“Elara Finch, Elder Jonas Finch,” High Elder Theron’s voice boomed, amplified by the acoustics of the hall. “You stand accused by Silas Marsh of manipulating communal funds and unauthorized access to the Steward’s Card, among other grievances. How do you respond?”

My father rose, his back straight. “High Elder Theron, Esteemed Elders, these accusations are baseless. Silas Marsh attempted to exploit Elara’s Steward’s Card for a million-dollar purchase, which was rejected thanks to Elara’s diligence. His claims of ‘recuperation’ are a fabrication, twisted from ancient decrees by recent, unauthorized ‘clarifications’ that serve only his ambition.”

Then it was my turn. I rose, my heart pounding, but my voice was steady. “I changed the codes on the Steward’s Card at my father’s instruction, to protect communal assets. Silas Marsh, without my knowledge or consent, attempted to use that card for a strategic political maneuver, to purchase ancient artifacts from the Sunstone Commune. This was not for personal gain, but to curry favor with Elder Kael, influencing a critical vote on water rights.”

I then turned to Lyra. “Lyra Bellweather, Silas’s alleged partner, has come forward. She can confirm Silas’s true intentions and the nature of his schemes.”

Lyra flinched, but slowly, reluctantly, she rose. Her eyes met mine briefly, a silent plea for courage. “High Elder Theron,” she began, her voice trembling but clear. “Silas told me… he was trying to secure an alliance with the Sunstone Commune. He intended to use those artifacts to influence Elder Kael. He also threatened my family, who are in exile, promising their return if I assisted him.”

A murmur rippled through the assembled witnesses. Silas’s smug expression flickered, replaced by a momentary flash of rage.

“Furthermore,” I continued, emboldened, “Silas Marsh has kept a hidden ledger, detailing not only his intricate plans but also years of financial malfeasance by High Elder Theron himself, proving systemic corruption within the Covenant.”

I produced the ledger, wrapped in a plain cloth, and placed it on the table. Its worn leather cover felt heavy, charged with secrets.

Silas, however, moved with surprising speed. Before Brother Matthias could react, Silas lunged across the table, snatching the ledger. He brandished it high, his eyes wild. “This ledger, Elders, proves the truth! Not just about my intentions, but about High Elder Theron’s greed!”

He pointed a finger at Theron, his voice rising to a frantic shout. “This book contains irrefutable proof that High Elder Theron has systematically siphoned off a full 15% of annual Sanctuary Tithes for ‘unaccounted-for infrastructure projects’ for over a decade! Millions of dollars, stolen from the communal coffers, lining his own pockets, while the people suffer!”

The hall erupted in gasps. The other Elders stirred uneasily. Theron’s face remained impassive, but a subtle tremor ran through his hand as it rested on the table.

“He unchained me not for indulgence, but because I threatened to expose him!” Silas yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “He feared the truth! This ledger details it all—the shell corporations, the false invoices, the hidden land acquisitions!”

I felt a surge of triumph, and fear. Silas was doing it. He was exposing Theron. This was the moment of truth.

Before Silas could elaborate further, before anyone could fully comprehend the gravity of his words, Brother Matthias, acting on a subtle, almost imperceptible nod from High Elder Theron, took a dramatic step forward. His booming voice cut through the stunned silence like a cleaver.

“Silence!” Brother Matthias commanded, his voice shaking the very walls. “Silas Marsh, your testimony is concluded. Your desperate accusations are unfounded and self-serving.”

He strode purposefully to the table, his powerful hand reaching for the ledger. Silas tried to pull it back, but Matthias’s grip was unyielding. The ledger was wrenched from Silas’s grasp.

“High Elder Theron, Esteemed Elders,” Brother Matthias announced, holding the ledger aloft, “I submit that Silas Marsh’s attempted transaction was a misguided but not malicious attempt to reclaim what he believed was owed to him after his emotional unchaining. His actions, while ill-advised, were born of distress, not premeditated fraud.”

My jaw dropped. He was exonerating Silas?

“We acknowledge the pain of unchaining can lead to irrational behavior,” Brother Matthias continued, his eyes sweeping across the assembly, an unspoken warning in their depths. “While his methods were regrettable, his intent, from a certain perspective, could be seen as an attempt to re-establish himself and, in his delusion, perhaps even to benefit the community through an unsanctioned alliance. Therefore, we find that the specific fraud charge brought by Elara Finch is mitigated by these extenuating circumstances.”

He turned to the Elders. “By internal Covenant law, we declare Silas Marsh to be ‘exonerated’ of the direct fraud against Elara Finch’s Steward’s Card.”

A wave of disbelief washed over me. Exonerated? After everything?

Brother Matthias then turned to Silas, his voice dropping to a stern, final tone. “However, your unchaining remains absolute. Your conduct and your divisive accusations against the High Elders are not condoned. This ledger,” he said, his grip tightening on the book, “is a fabrication, born of resentment and a twisted imagination. It will be confiscated as a testament to your ongoing defiance.”

He handed the ledger to another Elder, who immediately tucked it under his robe.

“This matter is now resolved,” Brother Matthias declared, his gaze locking with mine, cold and unyielding. “The charges against Elara Finch and Elder Jonas Finch are hereby dismissed. The community’s Steward’s Card protocols will be reviewed, and new security measures implemented. The Tribunal is concluded.”

The Elders rose, their faces now perfectly composed, as if nothing untoward had happened. Theron met my gaze for a fleeting second, a hint of something unreadable in his eyes, before turning and leading the procession out of the hall.

I stood there, stunned, the words echoing in my ears. Exonerated. The fraud dismissed. The ledger confiscated, called a fabrication. Silas was free from my charge, but still unchained. And Theron’s deeper corruption remained unexposed to the wider community, buried once again beneath the Covenant’s rigid facade. Our moment of truth had been cut short, brutally and efficiently. The reckoning was far from finished.
