Chapter 18: A Quiet Harbor (5 years later)

Lena knew she couldn’t face this alone anymore.

The growing evidence of Maria’s fraud, coupled with the legal threats, weighed heavily on her.

Her mind immediately turned to Elena Petrova, David’s cousin.

Elena was Maria’s niece, but she was also a more modern woman, independent and seemingly more open-minded than Maria.

Lena found Elena at a small coffee shop downtown, the aroma of roasted beans filling the air.

Elena’s usual guarded composure seemed even more pronounced today.

“Elena, I need to talk to you,” Lena began, her voice low and urgent.

She pushed a printout of her research on the “cleansing ritual” across the table, along with the highlighted bank statement and the summons for guardianship.

Elena picked up the printout first, her eyes scanning the academic articles.

Her expression remained neutral, but Lena saw a faint line of tension appear between her brows.

“Maria told me it was a tradition,” Elena said, her voice quiet.

“She always was very traditional, Lena. You know that. It’s how she is.”

Lena leaned forward, her frustration palpable.

“Elena, I’ve researched extensively. There is no such ritual. None. Maria fabricated it. She hurt Sofia, and then she lied about it, all to try and assert some kind of cultural claim.”

Elena flinched, her gaze finally meeting Lena’s.

“Fabricated?” she repeated, her voice barely a whisper.

“Are you sure?”

“I am absolutely sure,” Lena insisted, tapping the documents.

“And it gets worse. Maria is actively trying to take Sofia away from me. And she’s systematically trying to cripple me financially with fraudulent appraisals. Look at this.”

Lena pushed the appraisal report for David’s studio, along with the old statement showing the “Volkov?” notation, towards Elena.

“This man, Bogdan Volkov, keeps appearing. And David had concerns about him, even before his death.”

Elena picked up the appraisal report, then the bank statement, her fingers tracing the highlighted account number.

A distinct flicker of doubt crossed Elena’s face, a momentary crack in her carefully constructed neutrality.

Her eyes widened almost imperceptibly as she saw the name “Volkov” and the associated transaction.

“Maria… she’s always been very protective of the family, of our traditions,” Elena mumbled, trying to rationalize it, but her voice lacked conviction.

“But fraud… and hurting Sofia? That’s… that’s not her.”

“Isn’t it?” Lena pressed, her gaze unwavering.

“Think about it, Elena. The way she controls everything, the way she dismisses me, the way she twists cultural heritage to suit her own agenda. It’s all about control, and now it’s escalating to a full-blown attempt to take my daughter.”

Elena finally looked up, her face pale.

The casual dismissal of malicious intent, attributing it to generational differences, had vanished.

She knew more than she was letting on.

“I… I don’t know what to say, Lena,” Elena said, pushing her coffee cup aside.

She nervously picked at a loose thread on her sweater.

“Maria is my aunt. She’s David’s mother. Family loyalty is very strong for us. To accuse her of something like this…”

“I’m not accusing her, Elena, I’m showing you the evidence,” Lena interrupted, her voice firm.

“This isn’t about family loyalty anymore. This is about Sofia. This is about David, who was clearly trying to document something before he died.”

Elena averted her gaze again, staring out the coffee shop window at the bustling street.

Her discomfort was palpable, a physical manifestation of her internal struggle.

She was trapped between familial obligation and a burgeoning sense of moral responsibility.

Lena waited, allowing the silence to stretch, forcing Elena to confront the gravity of the situation.

Finally, Elena sighed, a long, weary sound.

“Maria has always been… particular about finances,” she conceded, her voice barely audible.

“She likes things to be ‘orderly.’ She believes she knows what’s best for everyone.”

That was a significant admission, an implicit acknowledgment that Elena had witnessed Maria’s controlling tendencies before.

“Orderly, or manipulative?” Lena challenged gently.

“Elena, David was compiling something. He was worried. I know it.”

Elena closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them, a troubled look in their depths.

“I can’t believe she would deliberately hurt Sofia,” she whispered, shaking her head.

“But the evidence… it’s disturbing.”

She didn’t offer to help, not yet.

Her fear of Maria, or her deep-seated respect for family hierarchy, still held her back.

But the flicker of doubt, the clear internal conflict, was a victory for Lena.

Elena knew more, and she was starting to believe.

“Please, Elena,” Lena pleaded, her voice tinged with desperation.

“Think about Sofia. Think about David. He wouldn’t want this.”

Elena slowly gathered the documents, stacking them neatly.

She didn’t return them to Lena, but held them close, as if contemplating their weight.

“I need time to think,” Elena said, her voice strained.

“This is… a lot. I have to go.”

She stood abruptly, leaving Lena alone at the table.

As Elena walked away, Lena watched her go, a mix of disappointment and a sliver of hope churning inside her.

Elena hadn’t committed, hadn’t offered her full support.

But she hadn’t outright dismissed Lena either.

The truth had landed, and it was clearly unsettling Elena’s conscience.

That, Lena realized, was a start.

The seed of doubt had been planted, and now it had to grow.
