Chapter 15: The Solitary Desk

Evelyn’s visit to St. Jude was unannounced, a calculated move disguised as concern for Arthur. She arrived holding a thick manila folder, claiming it contained “updated medical records” for my father. Her perfume, cloyingly sweet, wafted through the usually sterile hallways.

I watched her from a distance as she navigated the third floor, her eyes constantly scanning. She paused at the nurses’ station, engaging them in superficial chatter, her smile a practiced mask of charm.

Then, she veered towards my office.

My stomach tightened. I had anticipated a move like this. Evelyn was desperate, and desperate people resorted to dirty tactics. My office, however, was no ordinary administrative space. As part of my federal counter-fraud operations, a tiny, high-resolution security camera was discreetly mounted above my door, its lens no bigger than a pinprick, silently recording everything.

She pushed open my office door, which I had deliberately left unlocked. She glanced around quickly, her gaze sweeping over my desk, the neat stacks of folders, the quiet hum of my computers. Seeing no one, she moved with practiced stealth.

Her eyes landed on the “Incoming” tray on my desk, a clear plastic container meant for new documents. With a swift, almost imperceptible motion, she slipped her manila folder, slightly thinner than the one she’d been carrying, into the tray, burying it under a stack of hospital requisition forms.

She didn’t linger. A quick, satisfied smirk crossed her face as she turned, closing the door softly behind her. She then rejoined the public area, resuming her role as the distraught wife.

Hours later, the peace of my afternoon was shattered. Two hospital security guards, stern-faced and formal, appeared at my door.

“Dr. Lindqvist,” one of them said, holding a clipboard. “We’ve received an anonymous tip regarding a potential breach of federal prescription protocols. We need to conduct an immediate audit of your workspace.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my expression remained neutral. “Of course,” I said, rising from my chair. “How can I assist?”

They moved efficiently, systematically going through my drawers and cabinets. It was a thorough search, clearly not a casual check. The lead guard paused at the “Incoming” tray.

His fingers rummaged through the forms, then stopped. He pulled out the manila folder Evelyn had planted. Its cover was blank, but inside, I knew what they would find. Forged prescription orders, dated months ago, for high-value narcotics, complete with my supposed signature. The type of document that could strip a medical professional of their credentials and open them up to federal charges.

“These are highly irregular, Dr. Lindqvist,” the guard said, his voice grave, as he held up a form. “These appear to be unauthorized prescription orders, signed with your name.”

He looked at me, his gaze sharp with suspicion.

“Indeed,” I replied, stepping forward. “May I see them?”

I took the folder, pretending to examine the documents, though I already knew their contents. This was Evelyn’s attempt to frame me, to discredit me, to turn the tables and paint me as the criminal.

“I can assure you,” I said, handing the folder back, “these documents were not here prior to this afternoon. And my signature has been expertly forged.”

The guards exchanged a look. They weren’t convinced.

“We’ll need to impound these as evidence,” the lead guard stated. “And you’ll need to report to HR tomorrow for further questioning.”

“Understood,” I said, maintaining my composure. “However, before you leave, I’d like you to review some security footage.”

I gestured to the discreet camera above the door. “My office, as a federal compliance observation point, is under continuous surveillance. I believe the footage from earlier this afternoon may shed some light on how those documents came to be in my possession.”

The guards’ faces went from suspicion to mild confusion, then to dawning comprehension. The camera was so tiny, so perfectly integrated, they hadn’t even noticed it.

Their eyes darted to the camera, then back to the manila folder in their hands. The anonymous tip, the planted documents, my calm request for footage—the pieces were starting to click into place for them.

Evelyn, in her desperation, had miscalculated once again. Her attempt to frame me had been meticulously recorded, a pristine, irrefutable timestamp of her own criminal act.
