My Surgeon Husband Demanded a Divorce for His Pregnant Fellow and Claimed He Built the Hospital—Until His Father Revealed My Estate Owns 85% of It
My phone rang, pulling me from a fitful sleep in the motel room. The caller ID showed Richard Danforth. It was 3:00 AM.
“Claire,” his voice rasped, strained. “Julian. He’s made a move.”
A knot formed in my stomach. “What’s happened, Richard?”
“He’s convened an emergency, unannounced executive board meeting,” Richard explained, each word sounding like an effort. “For 8:00 AM this morning.”
My mind raced. This was Julian’s attempt to preempt me, to lock down his power before I could use the 85% proxy.
“To do what?” I asked, sitting up.
“Approve a corporate restructuring plan,” Richard stated, his voice tight with effort. “He’s trying to dissolve the family trust’s voting oversight. He wants to consolidate power, make himself permanent Chief Executive, immune to any challenge.”
This was Julian’s Hail Mary. If he succeeded, my controlling interest would be neutralized, my father’s legacy dismantled, and he would be untouchable.
“He can’t do that, can he?” I pressed, pulling on a shirt.
“Not if we act,” Richard countered, a cough interrupting him. “But it has to be at that meeting. With the trust documents and your proxy. Physically in the room.”
I heard a wheezing sound, a sharp intake of breath. “Richard, are you all right?”
“Just a bit of… chest pain,” he dismissed, though his voice betrayed him. “Too much stress. But I’ll be there, Claire. I’ll accompany you to the boardroom. My presence, as a founding trustee, will lend weight. And I’ll execute your 85% proxy rights myself.”
“You shouldn’t, not with chest pains,” I insisted, worried. Richard’s health had been declining for months.
“I must,” he replied, his voice firm despite the underlying weakness. “This isn’t just about Julian anymore. It’s about your father’s legacy. About the integrity of Oakridge. About those patients.”
His determination, even in illness, was a stark contrast to Julian’s ruthless ambition. Richard was choosing ethical duty over protecting his own son.
“I’ll meet you at 7:45 AM,” Richard said, his voice fading slightly. “Outside the executive suites. Don’t be late.”
He hung up before I could argue further about his health. The silence in the motel room felt heavy with the urgency of his words.
I dressed quickly, my mind a whirlwind of strategies. Julian had underestimated me at every turn. He had mistaken my quiet, methodical nature for weakness. He thought I would bend, would break, would just sign his papers and disappear.
But he had no idea of the allies I had gathered, the evidence I now possessed, or the fire that now burned within me. Chloe’s USB drive was safely tucked into my bag, its contents waiting to be unleashed. Sarah Chen’s sworn testimony was ready.
I knew this board meeting wouldn’t be a quiet affair. It would be a confrontation, a public reckoning for Julian. And I would be there, armed with the truth, to reclaim what was rightfully mine and, more importantly, to protect the patients who had been so callously betrayed. The dawn was breaking, bringing with it the most significant morning of my life.
