The freezing wind ripped through the sanctuary as Silas stood, aghast, framed in the open doorway. His breath plumed in the frigid air, and for a moment, he seemed to shrink. The wailing sirens were deafening now, a stark contrast to the quiet, pious hum that usually filled the compound.

Paramedics, bundled in heavy thermal gear, were already rushing towards Sister Miriam. Caleb, still clinging to his mother in the vestibule, let out a choked cry of relief as they surrounded her, carefully checking her vital signs. One paramedic draped a thick thermal blanket over her frail form, her exposed skin already showing signs of frostbite.

“Miriam needs immediate thermal care!” one of them shouted over the wind. “Hypothermia setting in fast!”

Silas turned, his gaze sweeping over the scene, a desperate animal caught in a trap. His eyes landed on me, burning with a fury that promised future retribution.

But before he could speak, a new voice cut through the chaos. “Silas Kincaid!”

Marcus. He stood at the bottom of the steps, his state investigator badge glinting even in the dim light, two uniformed troopers flanking him. His face was grim, unyielding.

Silas recoiled, his jaw tightening. “Who are you to address me? This is private land! A religious sanctuary!”

“This is a state elder protection emergency,” Marcus retorted, his voice carrying surprising authority over the wind. “And under Section 12 B of the 1998 Land Trust Charter, your tax-exempt status is contingent upon the continuous and humane care of all founding elders, on-site.”

He held up a laminated document. “Your recent actions against Sister Miriam Halloway constitute a direct breach of that charter. This compound’s property sovereignty is now void.”

Silas stammered, his usual eloquence deserting him. “Void? That… that’s an expired clause! A relic!”

“It was never officially revoked from the county register,” Marcus explained, his eyes locking with Silas’s. “And elder abuse laws are federal. We have jurisdiction here, Prophet.”

Marcus took another step forward, his gaze unwavering. “Prophet Silas Kincaid, you are under arrest for felony elder endangerment, willful neglect, and aggravated assault.”

Two state troopers moved, quick and efficient, their hands reaching for Silas’s arms. Silas tried to pull back, his face contorted in a mix of disbelief and outrage.

“This is an outrage!” he bellowed, his voice losing its customary power, sounding more like a desperate old man. “I am a man of God!”

One of the paramedics glanced back, shaking his head. Miriam was being carefully loaded onto a stretcher, her eyes still half-lidded, but a faint flush returning to her cheeks. She would live.

I watched, numb, as the troopers cuffed Silas. His hands, which had once held absolute power over all of us, were now bound behind his back. The cold, triumphant certainty that filled me was quickly chased by a hollow ache. It was done. But was it really over?
