Silas struggled, the metal cuffs biting into his wrists. The troopers held him firmly, their faces impassive. He craned his neck, searching desperately for a familiar face among the sea of uniforms.

“Gable! Sheriff Gable!” he shrieked, his voice cracking. “Intercede! This is illegal! You serve this county!”

Sheriff Eugene Gable finally appeared, emerging from the swirling snow near the property line. He looked utterly defeated, his face ashen, his shoulders slumped. He must have received the federal override notice. He stopped dead, his eyes meeting Silas’s.

For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound was the howling wind and the distant hum of ambulance engines. Silas’s eyes, wide with frantic hope, pleaded with Gable. He remembered the leverage, the personal farm mortgage Silas held over his family, the silent threats.

But Gable remained silent. His gaze dropped to the snow-covered ground. He shifted his weight, then looked away completely. His silence was deafening. It was a complete surrender, a betrayal of the man who thought he owned him. Silas’s control, so absolute just an hour ago, was utterly broken.

Marcus stepped forward, holding up another official-looking document. “Prophet Kincaid, these are the forfeiture orders. Under federal and state elder protection statutes, and in light of the breach of the 1998 Land Trust Charter, all assets of the Purity Covenant Fellowship are hereby frozen, pending a full investigation.”

Silas stared at the document, his mouth agape. Frozen assets. His lifeblood. His empire. It wasn’t just his freedom, it was his power.

“You can’t do this!” he gasped, but the words were weak, devoid of his usual commanding force. “This is sacrilege!”

“The law applies to everyone, Prophet,” Marcus said, his voice flat. He signaled to the troopers.

They began to lead Silas away, towards one of the waiting cruisers. He stumbled, his gaze still fixed on Gable, who now stood with his back to them, staring blankly into the blizzard. The man Silas thought he controlled had abandoned him.

As Silas was bundled into the back of the cruiser, his face pressed against the window, his eyes found mine. There was no fury there now, only a cold, stark hatred. He didn’t need to speak. His gaze promised that if he ever got out, I would pay.

The cruiser’s door slammed shut, cutting off his silhouette. The engine roared, and it began to pull away, disappearing into the white curtain of snow, taking Silas Kincaid with it.

I watched it go, a strange mix of relief and emptiness washing over me. Miriam was safe. Silas was gone. But the compound remained, a silent, imposing monument under the falling snow.
