I ignored Chloe’s tabloid threats. My mind raced, trying to find a way to cut through her gaslighting, to get solid proof before the federal agents breached the room.

My eyes fell on my smartwatch. It had a discreet audio patch capability.

I brought my wrist up, my thumb flying over the tiny screen. I quickly initiated a live audio line, routing it directly to Damon Kross’s number, which I’d pulled from the burner phone.

The call connected. Kross’s voice, thick with panic, suddenly boomed from my smartwatch speaker, filling the ruined office.

“Hello? Who is this? Why are you calling me from Marcus Delancy’s number?” Kross stammered, his voice cracking.

“It’s Marcus,” I said, my voice steady. “And I have your text messages with Julian Banning’s security chief right here.”

A sharp intake of breath from Kross. “W-what are you talking about?”

“The texts discussing the 7:00 PM transmission window,” I pressed, pushing the advantage. “The plan to expose my vault files.”

Chloe, who had been standing by the vault, froze. A subtle shift in her posture, a slight tightening around her eyes, revealed a crack in her composure.

“I… I don’t know anything about that,” Kross stammered, but his voice was trembling.

“You sold my security credentials, Kross,” I stated, my voice cutting through his lies. “The override code `883019`. How much did Banning pay you?”

A long, agonizing silence from the smartwatch.

Then, a desperate, choked confession. “Three hundred fifty thousand. Three hundred fifty thousand dollars, in cash. He promised me he wouldn’t hurt anyone, Marcus. Just… just get the code.”

The admission hung in the air, undeniable. Kross’s voice, small and broken, was ringing proof.

Chloe remained strangely calm. Too calm. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t react with the shock or outrage I expected. Instead, a strange, almost resolute glint appeared in her eyes.
