Chapter 13: Two Weeks Later

Vivian Zhao called an emergency meeting of the Chicago Vietnamese Artisans Guild. The notice, plastered on community boards, cited “gross financial mismanagement and ethical violations” by Linh Dao. Her goal was clear: publicly expel me, cripple my reputation, and make my business unsellable.

The meeting hall on Argyle Street buzzed with nervous energy. Elders, merchants, and fellow artisans filled the seats, their faces a mixture of curiosity and judgment. Vivian, composed and imperious, stood at the podium.

“Linh Dao has embezzled $150,000 from the artisan restoration fund,” Vivian announced, her voice resonating through the hall. “Funds intended for our community, redirected to unregistered overseas accounts.”

A wave of murmurs swept through the room. Vivian was painting me as a traitor, stealing from our own people. My stomach churned, but I stood tall, my face betraying no emotion.

Just as a vote was called, the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall swung open. Aunt Mai entered, her presence commanding attention, even in her simple áo dài. And beside her, moving slowly but with unwavering dignity, was Ba Huynh.

A hush fell over the room. Many had not seen the old master in years.

Aunt Mai walked directly to the elder board members seated at the front. Ba Huynh carried the same hidden wooden chest, now clasped open, revealing the aged ledgers within.

“Before this honorable guild makes a decision,” Aunt Mai said, her voice clear and resonant, “we ask that you review these records.”

Ba Huynh, with a steady hand, placed the original hand-signed ledger books from 2009 on the table before the elders. He pointed to specific entries, his gnarled finger tracing the lines.

“These are the original records of Dao & Zhao Imports,” Ba Huynh explained, his voice gaining strength. “They detail the financial arrangements made with Mr. Han, Vivian Zhao’s previous partner, and the fraudulent valuation markdowns orchestrated by Nigel Kincaid.”

He then showed them records pertaining to the artisan restoration fund. “The records show that the $150,000 in question was not embezzled by Linh. It was transferred by Vivian Zhao herself, under a ‘consulting fee’ to a shell corporation registered in her stepbrother Arthur Chen’s name, then funneled into a private account. The accusation against Linh is a fabrication.”

The hall erupted. Shocked whispers, angry exclamations. Many of the elders had been close to Mr. Han; his abrupt departure had always been shrouded in mystery. Now, the truth, documented in Ba Huynh’s impeccable hand, was laid bare.

Vivian’s face, usually so composed, fractured. Her eyes blazed, first at Ba Huynh, then at me. Her long-time financial backers, pillars of the community who had invested heavily in her ventures, began to stir, their faces grim. The unity Vivian had cultivated, the authority she wielded, was shattering before her eyes.

The vote to expel me was silently withdrawn. Vivian’s attempt to use the community against me had backfired spectacularly.
