Arthur lunged forward, his hand shooting out to snatch the paper from the high-top table. But Marcus was quicker. He neatly pulled the blue folder back, out of reach, without a single page being disturbed.
“I wouldn’t recommend that, Mr. Holloway,” Marcus said, his tone firm. “Tampering with evidence in front of a dozen witnesses might complicate matters further.”
He then held the folder open for me to see, his finger still pointing to the now infamous Clause 7b.
“The contract explicitly dictates,” Marcus reiterated, his voice clear, “that upon Clara Holloway turning twenty-eight or achieving her full medical license—whichever occurs first—the remaining principal sum of the trust, all $1.8 million of it, transfers instantly to her sole and unencumbered ownership.”
My eyes widened as I read the black ink of my mother’s elegant handwriting. It was there, clear as day. My mother, Evelyn. She had always thought of everything. A protective mechanism, designed to shield me from my father’s predatory control once I was truly an adult and independent.
A wave of dizzying relief washed over me, quickly followed by a surge of white-hot anger. My father had known this. He had been lying to me for over a year, manipulating me, making me believe he held complete sway over my future.
“One point eight million dollars,” a guest whispered, the number echoing through the sudden silence.
Arthur, defeated, sagged against the table. His chest heaved, his eyes glazed over. The careful facade of the generous patriarch crumbled before everyone’s eyes.
He tried to speak, but only a strangled sound emerged from his throat. He looked utterly broken, trapped in the harsh spotlight of his own deceit. The glittering crystal chandeliers seemed to mock his downfall.
Marcus, however, was not finished. He turned another page in the folder, revealing a series of financial records, neatly organized bank statements. His expression grew even graver.
The tension in the air was palpable, heavy with the weight of impending revelation.
