Chapter 12: The Everglades’ Embrace

The fortified archive room became a strange island of relative calm amidst the chaos that erupted outside. The sirens grew deafening, followed by the crunch of heavy vehicles on gravel and the authoritative shouts of Marshal Devlin’s tactical team. We could hear the distinct *crack* of breaching charges, then the metallic shriek of a gate being torn from its hinges.

Harrison paced the small room like a caged animal, glancing frantically between me, the still-unconscious Mark, and the locked door. His complexion was ghastly, a stark contrast to the triumphant gleam in my eyes.

“They’ll pin everything on me,” he muttered, his voice ragged. “They’ll say I was the mastermind. Mark was just following orders.”

I watched him, a part of me almost pitying the pathetic figure he’d become, stripped of his power and bravado. “He was your son, Harrison,” I said, a bitter edge to my voice. “He was also your accomplice. He helped push me into that pit.”

Another series of loud bangs echoed from the main building, followed by the splintering sound of wood. It sounded like they were systematically clearing the facility. The live stream on my phone, still broadcasting, showed glimpses of federal marshals in tactical gear moving through the preserve, weapons raised, securing perimeter zones. The viewer count was now well over 100,000.

“All private security personnel, stand down!” Marshal Devlin’s voice boomed again, closer this time, amplified by a bullhorn. “Drop your weapons! Failure to comply will result in immediate engagement!”

A few moments later, we heard the distinct clatter of firearms hitting concrete. The mercenaries had folded, just as Harrison knew they would. His empire of control was dissolving into nothing.

I looked down at Mark. His pulse was thready, but still there. The antivenom remained on the sterile tray, untouched. The leverage, for now, remained mine.

Suddenly, a loud, reverberating thump shook the archive door. A voice, calm and professional, called out, “This is Marshal Devlin! We know you’re in there, Dr. Garrett. We have the situation under control. Open the door.”

Harrison flinched, but I felt a wave of relief. It was over. Almost.

I walked to the door, my hand on the pressure lock. Before I opened it, I turned to Harrison. “You have anything to say?”

He looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “Just… that Mark needs help. He needs the antivenom. I’ll cooperate fully. Anything you want.”

“Too late for bargaining, Harrison,” I stated, my voice cold. “The truth is out. The land records, the financial sabotage, your confession regarding Maya’s lab – it’s all on record. And the entire world just watched it happen.”

I turned the heavy lock, the pneumatic seal hissing as it disengaged. The blast-proof door swung inward with a low groan, revealing the stark, professional figures of Marshal Sam Devlin and his tactical team.

Marshal Devlin, a man with a weathered face and sharp, unwavering eyes, stepped into the archive room. He took in the scene: the unconscious Mark, the dishevelled Harrison, me holding the phone with the live feed, and the untouched syringe of antivenom.

“Dr. Garrett,” Marshal Devlin said, his voice calm but firm. “I understand you have evidence critical to our investigation, and a medical emergency on your hands. We are securing the facility. Your cooperation is now paramount.”

The air outside hummed with the sounds of federal activity. Lights flashed. The voices of reporters, Brenda Vance-Loomis among them, could be heard excitedly shouting questions. This was it. The climax of a nightmare, unfolding under the harsh glare of public scrutiny.
