Chapter 12: The Everglades’ Embrace

The cool, humid air of the Florida Everglades rushed into the archive room as Marshal Devlin’s team escorted Harrison Adler and the still-unconscious Mark out into the harsh daylight. The transformation of the preserve was stark. Tactical vehicles lined the gravel drive, their lights flashing. Federal agents moved with practiced efficiency, cataloging evidence and securing the premises.

Reporters, a throng of them, surged forward, their cameras flashing like a thousand tiny suns. Brenda Vance-Loomis, her microphone held aloft, pushed through the crowd, her eyes fixed on me.

“Dr. Garrett! Can you confirm Dr. Harrison Adler’s admission of complicity in the destruction of your sister’s lab?” she shouted over the din.

I stepped out into the daylight, shielding my eyes, clutching the satellite phone. The live stream was still running, capturing this moment for posterity. I held up the syringe, now filled with the clear, life-saving antivenom.

“This is the antivenom that saved Mark Adler’s life,” I said, my voice clear and steady, amplified by the camera’s microphone. “I extracted the venom myself, then secured the only antidote. It was used as leverage to expose the financial fraud and land theft that has plagued this preserve for decades.”

Marshal Devlin approached me, his gaze firm but respectful. “Dr. Garrett, we need that serum core. And all your research notes, for processing.”

I nodded, placing the syringe carefully into a clear, sealed evidence bag that a federal agent presented. “Every protocol, every sample, every note from Maya’s research is secure in the archive. You’ll find them all digitized and indexed.”

Just then, a rumble grew from the main road, distinct from the federal vehicles. An older, faded green pickup truck, a relic of a bygone era, rattled down the drive, its suspension groaning. It was Great-Uncle Silas Garrett’s truck, emblazoned with a faded “Everglades Reserve Warden” decal.

Silas, 78 years old but still spry, emerged from the truck, a large, leather-bound satchel clutched in his hand. His eyes, sharp and knowing, found mine in the crowd. A small, knowing smile played on his lips.

“Took ’em long enough to read the writing on the wall,” Silas drawled, his voice carrying surprising authority despite the chaos. He walked straight to Marshal Devlin, bypassing the media scrum with a calm, deliberate air.

“Marshal Devlin,” Silas said, extending the satchel. “Good to see you again, son. Thought you might need these.”

Marshal Devlin took the satchel, his eyebrows raising as he opened it. Inside were more documents, yellowed and brittle, but clearly originals. He pulled out a large, hand-drawn map of the Okeechobee Preserve, intricately annotated, dated 1965. Tucked beneath it were property deeds, legal easements, and notarized affidavits, all preceding the Adlers’ claims.

“These are the original Garrett family land deeds,” Silas explained, his voice ringing with a quiet triumph. “Signed by my father and grandfather. They establish this land, including the adjacent marshlands, as an irrevocable trust for wildlife conservation. The Adlers’ purchase was fraudulent. Always was.”

A collective gasp swept through the reporters. The cameras zoomed in on the documents. Brenda Vance-Loomis, seizing the moment, practically shoved her microphone into Silas’s face.

“Mr. Garrett, are you saying the entire Okeechobee Preserve has been illegally owned for decades?” she pressed.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying, girl,” Silas affirmed, his gaze sweeping over the scene. “My family has been fighting these land grabbers for generations. This land was never theirs to sell for some bio-pharma scheme. It belongs to the Everglades, and to the people who seek to protect it.”

Marshal Devlin, his expression grim, held up the documents. “This evidence, combined with Dr. Garrett’s live broadcast and the digital ledgers, confirms a decades-long pattern of fraud and conspiracy. This preserve is officially under federal control, effective immediately.”

The weight of it all settled over me. The public exposure, the irrefutable evidence, Silas’s unwavering dedication. It was all real. Harrison and Mark, now being led away in handcuffs, their faces devoid of hope, were ruined. But this was only the beginning. The real work, the work of seeking justice for Maya, was still to come.
