Chapter 12: A Quiet Breakfast

The chilling loop of Gideon’s voice, amplified to every corner of the Tabernacle, finished its second play. The sheer, cold malice in his tone hung in the stunned silence. Not a single person in the hall moved. The only sound was the distant whine of a police radio from one of the deputies.

Gideon’s face had gone from crimson to a sickly, ashen grey. His eyes darted around the room, desperately seeking an ally, finding none. Even his loyalists looked uncomfortable, their eyes fixed on the floor or the ceiling, anywhere but Gideon.

Sheriff Kroll, halfway to my wheelchair, stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw hung slightly open. The recording wasn’t some fuzzy, ambiguous snippet. It was direct, explicit, and left no room for doubt. His complicity, his debt to Gideon, suddenly felt very exposed under the glare of those words.

“What… what is this?” Elder Bartholomew finally whispered, his voice hoarse with shock and horror.

“It’s the truth, Elder,” I said, my voice ringing with a newfound strength. “Gideon Hensley attempted to have me murdered last night in the garage, because I refused to sign away the infirmary land for his personal profit.”

A wave of murmurs, hushed but angry, swept through the congregation. Several members stood up, their faces a mixture of betrayal and outrage. They had trusted Gideon, believed in his righteousness. Now, his true nature was laid bare.

Sheriff Kroll, seemingly paralyzed by the revelation, remained motionless. He cast a quick, panicked glance at Gideon, who was now visibly trembling.

A few congregation members, particularly the younger men who had benefited from my care in the infirmary, began to move. They stepped forward, subtly positioning themselves between Sheriff Kroll and me, blocking his path. It was a silent, collective defiance. They wouldn’t let him touch me.

From the sound booth, Marcus Pryce’s voice came back over the speakers, calmer now. “The full audio will be released to public channels immediately. Along with documentation of the Deacon’s ongoing attempts to seize Tabernacle assets for personal gain.”

Gideon let out a strangled cry. He knew it was over. His empire, built on deceit and manipulation, was crumbling around him.

Then, Caleb, my quiet, resolute cousin, walked towards the altar. He held the ancient trust deed open, his finger pointing to Clause 14-B. The sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows illuminated the brittle parchment, making it seem almost sacred.

He cleared his throat, and his voice, clear and resonant, filled the hall. “Elders, congregation. This document, the original 1982 Tabernacle Trust Deed, contains a provision that I must now read aloud. It is Clause 14-B, the Stewardship Transfer Provision.”

He looked directly at Gideon, then at the stunned faces of the elders and the congregation.

“It states,” Caleb began, his voice gathering power, “‘In the event of provable physical harm or attempted physical harm to a duly appointed caretaker of The Way of Light Tabernacle by any individual holding a Deacon position, said Deacon shall immediately and irrevocably forfeit all positions of authority, administrative power, and any claim to the Tabernacle’s financial endowments, which shall thenceforth be transferred in their entirety to the aggrieved caretaker for the sole purpose of maintaining the sanctity and mission of the Tabernacle.’”

He paused, letting the full weight of the words settle. “And that endowment, as confirmed by this deed, amounts to three million five hundred thousand U.S. dollars.”

The second wave of shock was even more profound than the first. The very foundation of Gideon’s power, his financial leverage, was not only being stripped away but handed directly to me.
