Chapter 12: A Quiet Breakfast

Gideon stared at Caleb, then at the circle of unyielding elders, then at the congregation now openly staring him down. His face was a mask of utter defeat. The realization that his financial schemes, his decades of manipulation, were now completely untethered from the $3.5 million trust hit him with brutal force.

“You… you can’t!” he sputtered, his voice cracking. “I am the Deacon! This is my Tabernacle!”

“No, Gideon,” Elder Bartholomew said, his voice full of sorrow. “It was never yours to own. It was a sanctuary, entrusted to us. And you defiled that trust.”

I wheeled myself forward, stopping directly in front of Gideon. Barnaby remained steadfastly by my side, a silent, yellow guardian.

“You forget yourself, Gideon,” I said, my voice low but steady. “The Tabernacle’s mission is care, not conquest. Its funds are for healing, not hoarding. Your administrative title is revoked. Effective now, you are no longer welcome on these grounds.”

Gideon’s eyes, full of a desperate fury, fixed on me. “You’ll regret this, Ruth. You’ll regret everything.” But the threat was hollow, devoid of any real power.

Just then, Sheriff Kroll, who had been speaking in hushed tones into his radio, stepped forward. He looked utterly deflated, his usual swagger completely gone.

“Deacon Hensley,” Kroll said, his voice strained. “County investigators are on their way. They’re going to want to talk to you about some… irregularities in Tabernacle finances. And about a certain recording.” He didn’t meet Gideon’s eye.

The confession was implicit. Without Gideon’s financial protection, Kroll’s own entanglement in the scheme, particularly regarding his gambling debts and his willingness to ignore Gideon’s machinations, was now open season for investigation. He was cutting his losses.

“I have also informed them of the pressure you put on me, Deacon,” Kroll continued, his voice barely audible, clearly for the ears of the elders and congregation, acknowledging his coercion. “My family needed the money. I had no choice.”

A fresh wave of gasps went through the room. This was the public, official admission. Kroll had been leveraged, and now he was turning on his manipulator.

Gideon recoiled, as if physically struck. His face crumpled. The last vestiges of his authority, his respect, his very reputation, evaporated in that moment. He was exposed, ruined, and completely isolated.

His loyalists, seeing the tide turn decisively, began to back away, melting into the shocked congregation. They wanted no part of the fallout.

“Get out,” Elder Abigail commanded, her voice like steel. “Before the county investigators arrive and you are escorted in handcuffs.”

Gideon, defeated and alone, simply turned and stumbled out of the Tabernacle hall. The heavy doors swung shut behind him with a final, echoing thud, sealing his fate. He was no longer the Senior Deacon. He was simply Gideon Hensley, a man facing criminal conspiracy charges, stripped of everything. The Tabernacle, and its precious infirmary, were finally free.
