If you come near these children again, I will call the police, Adrian, Maya whispered, her hands trembling as she pulled the double stroller back.
My shout froze them, but only for a second. The enforcer holding Leo hesitated, his grip tightening on my son’s small arm. Maya, slumped against the van, watched me with a mix of terror and utter confusion.
“Adrian?” she whispered, her voice barely audible, laced with the phantom pain of my supposed betrayal.
Before anyone could react, the unmistakable roar of an armored SUV skidded to a halt behind my car. Agent Cruz. He had arrived.
“FBI! Everyone, hands up!” Cruz’s voice boomed through a megaphone, cutting through the chaos. Two federal agents, armed and tactical, emerged from the SUV, weapons raised.
The syndicate enforcers, trained for street-level intimidation, not federal confrontation, panicked. One of them, a bulky man with a shaved head, pulled a pistol from his waistband.
“Move! Get them in the van!” he yelled at the marshals.
The alley erupted. Gunshots cracked, echoing off the brick buildings. It wasn’t a firefight between two evenly matched sides; it was a desperate scramble by Julian’s men against overwhelming federal presence. Agent Cruz’s team returned fire, precise and controlled.
I didn’t wait. I lunged forward, tackling the enforcer who still had Leo. He grunted as we hit the pavement, his gun skittering away. I ripped Leo from his grasp, pulling my son into my arms. Leo buried his face in my chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
“Mama! Mama!” he cried.
Maya, seeing me, still seemed trapped in a haze of fear and disbelief. Her legs buckled, her breathing ragged, her hand pressed to her chest.
“Adrian, he said… you sent them…” she gasped, tears streaming down her face.
“No, Maya. Never,” I whispered, trying to reassure her while the world exploded around us. “I’m here now. I’m taking you home.”
One of Cruz’s agents was already securing Clara and Noah, bundling them into the back of the armored SUV. The enforcers, outmatched, were either subdued or fleeing. The corrupt marshals were cowering, hands raised.
“Adrian! Get her in the vehicle! Now!” Cruz shouted, pointing to the SUV.
I lifted Maya, her body surprisingly light and frail, and half-carried, half-dragged her towards the waiting SUV. She was a dead weight in my arms, her skin clammy, her breath coming in shallow, desperate gasps. I could feel the rapid, erratic beat of her heart against my hand.
I managed to buckle her into the backseat, right between Leo and Clara, who were still whimpering softly. Noah was already strapped in. I climbed in next to her, checking her pulse. It was thready, alarmingly fast.
“Maya? Can you hear me?” I asked, patting her cheek gently.
Her eyes fluttered open, then rolled back. A sudden, violent cough wracked her body. She clutched her chest, her lips turning a faint blue. Her breathing became even more labored, her eyes wide with a desperate, silent plea. Then, with a shuddering gasp, she collapsed into unconsciousness.
