If you come near these children again, I will call the police, Adrian, Maya whispered, her hands trembling as she pulled the double stroller back.
The next few hours were a blur of waiting rooms, hushed medical updates, and the chilling realization that my actions had just set off a chain reaction across the city. News channels, which had been covering Maya’s shooting as an isolated incident, suddenly pivoted.
I saw it unfold on a small, muted television screen in the waiting room at Northwestern Memorial. Julian Castaglione, impeccably dressed, stood at the podium in the Chicago City Hall press room. He was beaming, gesturing grandly as he delivered a live televised address regarding a new $200 million waterfront development project, flanked by city officials who nodded along to his smooth rhetoric.
He was mid-sentence, talking about “civic pride” and “investment in our future,” when a ripple went through the assembled reporters. Heads bowed over smartphones. A few hushed whispers broke out. Then, a collective intake of breath.
A reporter, a young woman from the Chicago Tribune, suddenly shouted, “Mr. Castaglione! Can you comment on the leaked federal indictment files outlining ten years of racketeering and wire fraud within the Moretti syndicate?”
Julian’s smooth smile faltered, a crack in his polished facade. He blinked, clearly confused. “I… I’m not familiar with any such reports. This is a press conference about civic development, not… speculative tabloid journalism.”
Another reporter, this one from CNN, bellowed, “Sources are confirming detailed ledgers outlining bribes paid to city council members and judges, as well as several hit orders attributed directly to you, sir! What do you say to allegations of conspiracy to murder Maya Brooks and her three children?”
The room exploded into a cacophony of shouting questions. Reporters, their phones now full of the unredacted dossier I had sent, thrust them forward, flashing screens at Julian.
Julian stammered, his face draining of color. His hand, shaking visibly, knocked over the water glass on the podium. His carefully prepared speech notes fluttered to the ground, ignored.
“I… I think there’s been some kind of misunderstanding,” he mumbled, his voice tight and uneven, completely unlike his usual confident tone. He tried to brush off the questions with an awkward wave, but his eyes darted desperately towards the back of the room.
The city officials next to him exchanged horrified glances, slowly distancing themselves. Julian, seeing his empire crumbling in real-time, turned and practically ran off the stage, abandoning the podium and the live broadcast.
But there was no escape. As he darted towards the rear exit, away from the cameras and the flashing lights, two figures stepped out from the shadows. FBI agents, their faces stern and unyielding.
Julian Castaglione stopped dead, his shoulders slumping. He looked back at the cameras, still rolling, then at the agents. The click of handcuffs echoed, stark and absolute, even over the din of the retreating reporters. The camera lingered, a final, damning image of the man who thought he was untouchable.
