Chapter 12: True Ending

The shock of his total financial annihilation seemed to paralyze Julian. He stood amidst the debris of his collapsed reputation and wealth, his face a mask of disbelief. The Grand Hall had mostly emptied, leaving only a few stunned university staff to witness the final act of his downfall.

I saw a security guard approach him, clipboard in hand, a look of uncomfortable duty on his face.

“Mr. Delaney?” the guard said, his voice flat. “I’m afraid I have to inform you that your university parking permit has been revoked, effective immediately.”

Julian blinked, trying to process this trivial blow amidst the tsunami of his larger losses. “What? That’s ridiculous.”

“And your vehicle, a black Mercedes S-Class, has been flagged for repossession,” the guard continued, unfazed. “It’s being towed from lot B as we speak.”

Julian let out a strangled sound. The Mercedes. His prized possession, a symbol of his status, now just another asset to be seized. The world he had so meticulously constructed was crumbling around him, brick by expensive brick.

He stumbled out of the Grand Hall, moving with a desperate urgency, as if he could outrun the automated clawbacks. I watched him go, a hollow ache in my chest. This wasn’t the triumphant moment I might have imagined. It was just… grim.

I stepped outside, into the cool, damp night air. The rain had started again, a soft, persistent drizzle that slicked the university parking lot. Streetlights cast long, distorted shadows. The only sounds were the distant hum of traffic and the quiet drumming of rain on the asphalt.

Julian was there, under the flickering glow of a single lamppost. He was frantically pacing, shouting into his phone, his voice strained and desperate.

“They can’t do this! This is corporate espionage! This is an illegal seizure!”

His words were futile. The system he thought he owned was now devouring him. I could hear the distinct whirring of a tow truck in the distance, slowly growing louder. It was coming for his last luxury vehicle.

He hung up, slamming the phone against his palm. His head snapped up, and his eyes scanned the parking lot, wide and wild. He wasn’t looking for his car; he was looking for me.

His gaze finally landed on my silhouette by the entrance, illuminated by the soft glow from the building. His shoulders slumped. The arrogant, imposing figure I had known for years was gone, replaced by a defeated, utterly broken man.

He started walking towards me, slowly at first, then picking up speed. There was a desperate urgency in his stride now, a final, frantic hope that I might possess some secret lever to stop this train wreck. He still hadn’t grasped the fundamental truth: this wasn’t about me, or even about Lily anymore. This was about the unforgiving logic of the market, triggered by his own greed.

And somewhere in the ancient stone of Mallow House, the faint, unearthly hum seemed to echo, a silent, knowing witness to the justice it had helped orchestrate.
