Chapter 11: Beyond Sovereign Hope

The journey to Boise was a blur of fear and exhaustion. We walked through the night, then managed to hitch a ride with a kind trucker who dropped us near the city limits. Noah, feverish and weak, slept in my arms for most of it. My resolve was the only thing keeping me upright.

Finally, we stood before 1421 Commerce Street. It was a tall, imposing building of dark brick and glass. Mr. Arthur Abernathy’s name was engraved on a polished brass plaque.

The receptionist, a brisk woman with neat grey hair, eyed my plain clothes and Noah’s disheveled state. “Do you have an appointment?”

“No,” I said, my voice hoarse. “But it’s urgent. It concerns the Thorne Family Trust. And Eliza Thorne’s son, Noah.”

Her demeanor shifted immediately. Her eyes, which had been dismissive, now held a flicker of recognition, then concern. “Please, wait here. I’ll inform Mr. Abernathy.”

Minutes later, a tall, distinguished man with kind, tired eyes emerged. Mr. Abernathy. He took one look at Noah, then at me, and guided us into his office without a word.

His office was quiet, smelling of old leather and paper. He offered Noah a glass of water and a cracker, which the boy barely touched.

“I am Amelia Vance,” I said, introducing myself. “Eliza Thorne was my sister.”

Mr. Abernathy nodded. “I suspected. Eliza mentioned you in her early correspondence. She always held hope for you to leave Sovereign Hope.”

He sat behind his large desk, his expression grave. “The Thorne Family Trust for Noah is substantial. The amount Eliza documented, $50,000,000, was the initial sum. With accumulated interest and shrewd investments over the years, the trust is currently valued at approximately $60,000,000.”

My head reeled. Sixty million dollars.

“However,” he continued, his voice firm, “Eliza was incredibly specific in its structure. She foresaw the potential for… undue influence.” He paused, looking at me pointedly. “The trust contains strict clauses. Any guardian or individual connected directly or indirectly to Sovereign Hope, or any similar high-control religious organization, is legally barred from accessing or managing the funds.”

Another layer of Eliza’s foresight. She had protected Noah not just from her birth family, but from the cult itself.

“Furthermore,” Mr. Abernathy said, picking up a document, “the inheritance is contingent on Noah being verified as free from the compound’s influence. And the birthmark Eliza described? It’s not just an identifier. It’s a specific biometric marker, unique to her family line. We’ll need a medical professional to verify it. It’s a very particular genetic pattern.”

My sister hadn’t just used the mark as a symbol; she’d known it was a physical, unforgeable key. She’d woven the legal framework so tightly, it was almost impenetrable.

“So, the Elder’s plan for a ‘spiritual transfer’?” I asked, a bitter laugh escaping me.

Mr. Abernathy’s lips tightened. “Legally meaningless. And quite frankly, grounds for criminal charges if they attempted to forge documents or coerce the child. The trust is designed to be anti-cult. It’s Eliza’s final, powerful protest.”

A wave of relief washed over me, so strong it almost buckled my knees. Noah was safe, his inheritance secured. But the magnitude of what lay ahead – medical verification, establishing guardianship – felt overwhelming.

“And now,” Mr. Abernathy said, a new urgency in his voice, “we must act quickly. Because I suspect the people you’ve escaped from are already looking for you.”
