Chapter 11: Beyond Sovereign Hope

Just as Mr. Abernathy finished speaking, the receptionist’s voice crackled through the intercom, strained and hurried. “Mr. Abernathy, there are… visitors. From Sovereign Hope.”

My blood ran cold. Elder Silas. Brother Thomas. They had tracked us down. So fast.

The door to the office burst open. Elder Silas, his face a mask of righteous fury, stood framed in the doorway, Brother Thomas hovering behind him. They were not alone. Two other compound members, their faces grim, stood behind them, their eyes sweeping the room, stopping on Noah.

“Amelia! You dare abscond with a child of God?” Elder Silas thundered, his voice echoing in the polished office. “You poison his mind with worldly desires!”

Noah whimpered, instinctively pressing closer to me.

“Elder Silas,” Mr. Abernathy said, his voice calm, cutting through the bluster. “I advise you to lower your voice. This is a legal office, not a pulpit.”

Elder Silas ignored him, striding towards us. “Noah belongs with his family, in the grace of God! You have no claim!”

“Actually,” Mr. Abernathy interjected, rising from his desk, “I believe I do. And the law supports it.” He held up a thick file. “I represent Eliza Thorne’s estate, and more importantly, her son, Noah Thorne.”

He turned to the Elder, his gaze unwavering. “And I am well aware of your history, Elder Silas. And your attempts to gain control of Eliza Thorne’s assets, dating back to her disinheritance.”

Elder Silas froze, his bluster draining from his face, replaced by a flicker of genuine shock. “What are you speaking of?”

Mr. Abernathy pulled out several documents. “These are records of your legal petitions, filed anonymously or through proxies, attempting to have Eliza Thorne declared ‘mentally unfit’ or to assign ‘spiritual guardianship’ over her perceived inheritance. All of which were rejected, I might add. The Thorne family was quite thorough in ensuring Eliza’s wishes for Noah were paramount.”

He handed copies to the other compound members who had accompanied the Elder. Their eyes widened as they scanned the documents. Whispers broke out.

“He tried to get her money?” one woman murmured, looking at Elder Silas with dawning horror.

“This is a fabrication!” Elder Silas roared, his face paling, the carefully constructed facade crumbling. “Slander against God’s chosen servant!”

“Is it?” Mr. Abernathy asked, his voice sharp. “Or is it proof that your motives have always been less about God’s will and more about the Thorne family fortune? This trust, Elder Silas, was designed to keep people like you from ever touching a single cent.”

Brother Thomas, seeing the Elder’s collapse, began to back away nervously. The two other compound members stared at the Elder, their faces now a mixture of confusion and profound disillusionment. They had believed in him, in his spiritual purity. Now, it was clear he was just another man, driven by greed.

The confrontation, the betrayal, played out in the stark, unforgiving light of the legal office. The Elder’s power, built on faith and intimidation, shattered in an instant.

“You will leave this office now,” Mr. Abernathy stated, his voice ringing with authority. “And any further attempt to contact Noah or Amelia will be met with the full force of the law.”
