If you loved your son, Connor, you wouldn't begrudge his family a modest meal.
Mason’s hand trembled as he extended the manila folder. It felt heavy, a tangible weight of deceit and stolen trust. The crowd on Teresa’s lawn was utterly silent, waiting. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
I slowly reached out and took the folder. The paper felt cool beneath my fingertips. It was thick, stuffed with documents. I could feel the stiff edges of multiple pages.
I opened it on the hood of my truck, turning the cover towards me. My heart hammered against my ribs. This was it. The proof. The forged signatures, the fraudulent paperwork, the evidence that would finally bring Teresa and Mason down.
My eyes scanned the first page. It was indeed a quitclaim deed. My breath hitched.
I braced myself, expecting to see a clumsy forgery of my signature, or perhaps Amy’s, manipulated and faked. My hands tightened on the edges of the folder. I was ready for the indignation, for the righteous fury.
But as my gaze fell to the signature line, the anger I expected to feel was replaced by a cold, numbing shock.
There it was. Not a crude imitation. Not a clumsy attempt at fraud.
It was Amy’s signature.
Her familiar, elegant script, perfectly formed. Below it, the official state notary stamp, crisp and clear. The date: twenty-one days prior.
A wave of nausea washed over me. Julian Brooks hadn’t been mistaken. Amy had signed this. Voluntarily.
My eyes darted to the top of the document. “Grantor: Amy Bradley.” “Grantee: Teresa Gable.”
It wasn’t a forgery. It wasn’t a scam to steal *my* house from under *my* nose. It was Amy, signing over her 50% equity stake to Teresa.
The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. The betrayal wasn’t from Teresa alone. It ran deeper. Much, much deeper.
Mason, standing beside my truck, watched my face. He must have seen the dawning horror in my eyes. He said nothing. The neighbors watched in silent anticipation, their eyes glued to the open folder.
My entire body felt like it had turned to ice. The manila folder, instead of being a weapon to destroy my enemy, had become a mirror, reflecting a truth far more devastating than any fraud.
