Chapter 9: A Quiet Hearth (2 weeks later)

#content-1

Two weeks later, the chaos had subsided into a quieter, more reflective aftermath. Matilda, Richard, and Scarlett Albright faced serious legal charges, including fraud, harassment, and assault. Their public image was in tatters, their businesses a memory, and their access to any significant family wealth irrevocably severed.

Leo sat on the porch swing of Briarwood House, the evening air cool and fresh. Elena sat beside him, her hand resting gently on her visibly rounded stomach. Finn was asleep in the living room, a soft blanket tucked around him, no longer needing the security of the cold storage room.

His phone buzzed. It was Chloe Chen.

“Hey, Chloe,” Leo answered, a smile in his voice.

“Leo, just wanted to give you an update,” Chloe said, her voice buoyant. “The ‘Stewardship Bond’ legend has officially gone mainstream. Historians are digging into the Anglo-Saxon connections, and Briarwood House is being proposed for a new historical landmark designation. People are calling it ‘The Sentinel House’ everywhere.”

“That’s incredible,” Leo said, looking at the familiar facade of his home, feeling its gentle creaks and soft sighs as a comforting presence.

“And your family,” Chloe continued, her tone more serious, “they’re not appealing the restraining orders. It looks like they’re pretty much out of the picture for good. Justice served, I’d say.”

“Justice, and a good dose of supernatural intervention,” Leo quipped, a lightness in his heart he hadn’t felt in years.

He ended the call, then squeezed Elena’s hand, feeling the new life within her, strong and vibrant. He thought about how close he had come to losing everything again, how his past failures had ironically sharpened his senses, making him meticulously vigilant. This time, his protectiveness had extended beyond his own company to encompass the most important part of his new life: his family, and the ancient spirit that protected them.

“The greatest treasures are never stolen,” he said softly, looking out at the twilight descending over the garden. “They are found, and then fiercely protected.”
