Chapter 11: A Long Time Later

My gaze locked with Brandon’s, demanding an answer. The hallway hummed with an expectant silence, broken only by the rapid-fire clicks of cameras.

“Why, Brandon?” I repeated, my voice raw with years of unasked questions. “Why the lies? Why the eviction? Why try to put me in a nursing home while your mother was still alive?”

He flinched, his eyes darting to the reporters, then back to me. A muscle in his jaw twitched. He opened his mouth, a hesitant word forming on his lips.

Before he could utter it, his corporate attorney, the stern woman, abruptly stepped between us. She was holding a smartphone, its screen facing Brandon. Her face was grim.

“Brandon,” she whispered urgently, her voice cutting through the strained quiet. “You need to see this. Now.”

Brandon snatched the phone from her hand. His eyes scanned the screen, and the color drained from his face. His carefully constructed mask of irritation shattered, replaced by pure, unadulterated panic.

“No,” he gasped, a strangled sound. “No, this can’t be happening.”

His other lawyer, a heavy-set man, leaned in, whispering rapidly into Brandon’s ear. I could only catch fragments: “…major investors… pulling out… reputational damage… complete withdrawal…”

Brandon’s head snapped up. His eyes, now wide and unfocused, swept over the crowd, then landed on me for a brief, bewildering moment. There was no anger, no apology, just a flash of desperate, frantic fear.

“We have to go,” the female attorney hissed, grabbing his arm. “Now, Brandon! Before it’s too late!”

She practically dragged him away, pulling him through a side exit door that led directly to a back alley, bypassing the courtroom and the press entirely. Brandon didn’t resist, didn’t even look back. He simply allowed himself to be propelled out of the building, out of the confrontation.

The door swung shut behind them with a soft click, leaving me standing in the crowded hallway, my questions hanging unanswered in the air. The silence that followed was heavy, pregnant with unresolution.

The reporters, bewildered, turned their cameras back to me. Chloe, standing beside me, looked as stunned as I felt.

“He just… left?” I murmured, the enormity of the anticlimax settling over me. “He just walked away?”

The confrontation I had prepared for, the one where I finally got to air all my grievances, had been cut short. His panic, spurred by financial ruin and investor backlash, had outweighed any desire to face me, or even defend himself.

The public outrage that Chloe’s article had sparked had hit Brandon where it hurt him most: his wallet. And it had forced him to flee, leaving behind a profound, aching emptiness where I had hoped for answers.
