Chapter 11: A Long Time Later

The morning sun warmed the worn wooden counter of the Pawhuska diner, making the chrome sugar dispensers gleam. The smell of fried eggs and strong coffee hung in the air, a comforting scent after the cold, stale barn. I slid onto a stool, feeling the ache in my back.

A young woman sat two stools down, her laptop open, tapping rapidly. She wore faded jeans and a determined expression, a notepad full of scribbled notes beside her plate.

“Rough morning?” she asked, without looking up from her screen. Her voice was bright, surprisingly friendly.

I grunted. “You could say that.”

She finally glanced at me, her brown eyes quick and intelligent. “Freelance reporter,” she explained, gesturing to her laptop. “Chloe O’Malley. Chasing local stories, trying to make a name for myself.”

“Arthur Gable,” I offered. “Trying to figure out where my name belongs anymore.”

She paused her typing. “Oh? That sounds like a story right there.”

I hesitated, then found myself telling her about the past few days. The funeral, Brandon, the locks, the nursing home forms, the condemned farm, the blue trunk. I even mentioned Halloway’s slip, the cold calculation in Brandon’s actions. Chloe listened intently, nodding occasionally, not interrupting.

“My son cleared out my accounts, essentially,” I finished, a bitter taste in my mouth. “Left me with a pile of dust and a key to a falling-down barn.”

“And you found cash?” she pressed, her reporter’s instinct kicking in. “How much? And the adoption papers? That’s… quite a lot to unpack.”

I told her about the $250,000 and the documents. Her eyes widened. “This isn’t just a local story, Mr. Gable. This is incredible.”

The diner door chimed, and a familiar figure walked in. Sheriff Ray Callahan. He was a big man, his uniform straining slightly at the shoulders, and he scanned the room with an air of authority. My stomach dropped.

He spotted me, his gaze fixed and unblinking. He walked directly to my stool, not bothering with pleasantries.

“Mr. Gable,” he said, his voice flat. He pulled a folded paper from his breast pocket. “Got an order here. Brandon Gable, your son, filed a safety hazard complaint against that property on County Road 26. Says the barn’s unstable, a danger to public safety.”

He unfolded the paper and held it out. It was an immediate eviction notice, dated just this morning. The official seal was crisp, the ink still fresh.

“You’re to vacate the premises by sundown,” Sheriff Callahan stated. “We’ll be back tomorrow morning to clear the property.”

Chloe, who had been listening, slammed her laptop shut. “Sheriff, is this normal procedure? An immediate eviction based on a son’s complaint about his father’s property?”

Callahan spared her a dismissive glance. “It’s a legitimate safety concern, ma’am. That barn is old. We’ve got development interests in this county. Can’t have hazards.”

He turned back to me, his eyes stern. “Consider this your final warning, Mr. Gable. Don’t be there tomorrow.”

He turned on his heel and walked out, leaving the notice fluttering slightly in my hand. My breakfast, forgotten, grew cold on the plate.

I stared at the paper, then at Chloe. Brandon wasn’t just hunting for money; he was actively trying to force me out, to take everything away. He wanted that barn, maybe thinking there was more to find, or simply to erase my last refuge.
