The shouts from outside grew louder, mingling with the blare of sirens in the distance. My security detail was already moving, preparing to intercept whoever was at the door. I knew this wasn’t just media. This felt like a coordinated strike.

My phone rang again, vibrating violently in my hand. The Caller ID was blocked. I almost didn’t answer, but something about the timing, the sheer audacity of the public attack, told me who it was.

I put it on speaker. Elena stared at me, her eyes wide.

“Dominic, my friend,” a voice purred, smooth and dripping with false sympathy. Sal Greco. Head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate. “Heard about your son. A real shame.”

He paused, letting the words hang in the air, a cruel, mocking silence.

“A real shame about your… negligence. It’s difficult to run a port when your priorities are so… misaligned.”

My grip tightened on the phone. “You set this up, Greco.”

His laughter was a low, chilling chuckle. “Set what up? I just read the news, like everyone else. A concerned citizen. We all worry about safety at our ports, don’t we? Especially for the vulnerable.”

“You leaked those documents to O’Neil.”

“Mr. O’Neil is a fine journalist,” Greco said, still laughing. “He simply connected the dots. The public has a right to know when their port leaders are cutting corners with, say, medical equipment.”

“This is about Julian, you coward,” I hissed. “You’re using my son.”

“I’m just observing the natural consequences of poor leadership, Dominic,” Greco replied, his voice hardening slightly. “A leader who can’t even keep his own family safe, let alone his operations. It casts a certain… pall over his authority, wouldn’t you say?”

He then delivered the final, crushing blow. “I’ll be seeing you at the Brooklyn Terminal meeting tomorrow, Dominic. Some of your old associates have been calling. Apparently, they’re looking for new management. More reliable management.”

The line went dead.

Sal Greco had not only orchestrated the leak to O’Neil, twisting a family tragedy into a syndicate power play, but he was now using the public scandal as leverage to directly undermine my control. His call confirmed everything: the smear campaign, the immediate pressure on my business, and the brazen attempt to seize my terminals. It was a declaration of war.
