Chapter 13: A Simple Sunday

I sat across from a pro-bono lawyer at a small legal clinic downtown, the air thick with the smell of old paper and desperation. Her name was Ms. Chen, a kind-faced woman who listened patiently as I laid out the entire tangled web: Marcus, the forged birth certificate, the DNA evidence, the bribe to Sneed, and now the visa threats.

When I finished, she exhaled slowly, adjusting her glasses.

“Ms. Tran, based on what you’ve presented, you have an exceptionally strong case for fraud, extortion, and potentially even criminal charges against Mr. Gable,” she stated, her voice firm. “The DNA evidence, the documented kickback, Karen Albright’s testimony… it’s all very compelling.”

A flicker of hope ignited within me. Justice.

“So, we can take him to court?” I asked, leaning forward.

She nodded. “Absolutely. We could file immediately. Seek restitution for your lost equity, expose his fraudulent claims about your husband’s paternity, and invalidate the market’s appraisal.”

“And the market?” I pressed. “What about the vendors? He’s threatening to report them to immigration, to shut down their stores.”

Ms. Chen’s expression clouded. “That’s where it gets complicated. A public fraud lawsuit, especially one involving a prominent real estate figure like Marcus Gable, would be messy. It would generate significant media attention.”

My heart sank.

“Legal battles of this magnitude typically take a minimum of two years, often longer, with appeals,” she continued. “During that time, all assets related to Tran & Gable Imports, including the market property, would likely be frozen. The building would be sealed as evidence.”

The words echoed in my ears: *two years, frozen, sealed.*

“The vendors,” I whispered, picturing Mrs. Phan’s terrified face. “They wouldn’t survive two months without their stalls.”

Ms. Chen nodded gravely. “Precisely. Even if you win, even if Marcus Gable goes to prison, the market would be ruined. The vendors would lose everything in the interim. Their businesses, their homes, potentially their immigration status if audits were triggered.”

The truth hit me like a physical blow. Winning in court, achieving legal justice, meant destroying the very community I was trying to save. It meant condemning my neighbors to ruin, all to claim back my own $250,000 equity.

My personal victory would be their ultimate defeat.

I stood up, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. “Thank you, Ms. Chen,” I said, my voice hollow. “I understand now.”

I walked out of the clinic, leaving the hope of legal redress behind. Marcus had backed me into an impossible corner. He understood that my loyalty to my community ran deeper than my desire for personal vindication or financial compensation.

He thought he had won. He thought I would surrender.

But he didn’t understand that I would find a different path. One that saved the community, even if it cost me everything. The legal system couldn’t protect us without hurting us. So, I would have to create my own justice, in private, on my own terms.
