The elegant foyer shattered around us. The clash of metal racks, the muffled shouts, the gasps of onlookers — it all became a blur. My gaze was fixed on Malik and Daryl, locked in a desperate struggle over one of my display racks.

“Let go, Daryl!” Malik yelled, his voice strained, his young face contorted with effort. He was trying to protect the brocades, shielding them with his body.

Daryl snarled, his grip on the metal rack tightening. His eyes, usually just dull, now held a dangerous glint. “Get outta my way, you little punk!”

Suddenly, Daryl twisted, using his full body weight. Malik, caught off balance, stumbled backward. The rack clattered to the ground, scattering my luminous garments across the polished marble.

My breath caught in my throat. Everything seemed to slow down.

Malik took another step back, trying to regain his footing. But he was too close to the edge of the grand staircase. His foot missed a step.

“Malik!” I screamed, a raw, primal sound tearing from my chest.

He fell. Not just a stumble, but a violent, sickening tumble down the wide, marble steps. His body bounced, a helpless rag doll against the unforgiving stone. Each thud resonated through the lobby, through my very soul.

A sudden, horrified silence descended on the foyer. No one moved, no one spoke. Only the faint, almost imperceptible shimmer of my scattered brocades caught the light.

Then, Malik lay still at the bottom of the stairs, an unnatural angle to his body. A dark, spreading stain began to bloom on the pristine white marble beneath his head.

My legs moved on their own, a painful, frantic sprint down the remaining steps. “Malik! My baby! Malik!”

I reached him, falling to my knees beside his motionless form. His eyes were open, but unfocused. His chest barely moved. I touched his face, his skin cool beneath my trembling fingers.

“Call an ambulance!” Devonte shouted, his voice cracking with panic. He was already fumbling with his phone.

Marcus, who had been watching from above, froze. His face, moments ago smug, was now a mask of pure terror, bleached of all color. He looked from Malik to Daryl, who stood paralyzed, his hands still extended as if he’d just pushed a ghost.

Daryl’s face crumpled. “I… I didn’t mean to… He just… he got in the way.” His voice was a panicked whimper, a stark contrast to his earlier aggression.

Paramedics arrived in what felt like an eternity but was probably only minutes, their sirens wailing distantly then growing impossibly loud. They worked over Malik, their movements efficient, grim. They spoke in low tones, words like “spinal trauma” and “catastrophic injury” hanging in the air like poison.

My world narrowed to the sight of Malik, my grandson, my apprentice, my hope, lying broken on the cold, indifferent marble. The luxurious hotel, designed for beauty and celebration, had become the scene of an unspeakable tragedy. The fight for my legacy had just exacted the cruelest price.
