Chapter 12: Silent Horizon

The night of the Metropolitan Fashion Week gala descended like a velvet cloak, heavy with anticipation. Inside the Grand Metropolitan Hotel, a buzz of high society mingled with the hushed excitement of fashion critics. Marcus Gaines’s “Maison Gaines Heritage Line” was the talk of the evening, his grand ballroom show already underway.

Down in the cavernous lobby, the air hummed with a different kind of tension. Malik, Devonte, and our small crew of street models moved with practiced stealth. We had set up our display against a grand marble pillar, using the elegant architecture as an impromptu backdrop. Racks of my light-reactive brocades stood waiting, each garment a silent sentinel.

The soft glow from our improvised candle rigs cast long, dancing shadows, giving the lobby a strangely ethereal atmosphere, a stark contrast to the glittering chandeliers overhead.

Suddenly, a voice boomed across the marble foyer, cutting through the low murmur of surprised onlookers.

“What in the hell is going on here?”

It was Marcus. He stormed down the grand staircase, his face a mask of fury. Beside him, Cousin Daryl, his face hard and menacing, and two burly hotel security guards.

“Mama El, he found us,” Malik whispered, pushing me gently behind one of the racks.

Marcus pointed a shaking finger at me. “Eleanor, you need to pack this circus up. Now! You’re disrupting my show, embarrassing the family!”

“Your show?” I stepped forward, my voice firm despite the tremor in my hands. “This is my legacy you’re parading in there, Marcus. And this,” I gestured to my glowing brocades, “this is what you truly tried to bury.”

Daryl, always quick to follow Marcus’s lead, took a step forward. “Listen to your son, old woman. Don’t make a scene.”

Then, without another word, Marcus waved his hand. “Tear it down!”

The security guards, looking uncomfortable but bound by their duty, moved toward our racks. Cousin Daryl, however, moved with a sickening eagerness. He grabbed one of the garment racks, pulling hard.

“Hey! Get your hands off that!” Malik yelled, rushing forward.

The foyer erupted. Devonte tried to block Daryl, but he was shoved aside. The racks swayed precariously, garments spilling onto the pristine marble floor. One of my precious brocade tunics landed with a soft thud, its light-reactive threads briefly flashing in protest.

I lunged forward, trying to protect my work. “Stop it! Don’t touch them!”

A security guard grabbed my arm, his grip surprisingly gentle but firm. “Ma’am, you need to cooperate.”

Marcus stood at the top of the stairs, watching the chaos unfold with a smug, self-satisfied look, as if this was all part of his calculated plan. He didn’t care about the garments, only about maintaining his control.

Then, I saw Daryl. He was still wrestling with Malik over a rack, his face contorted in a sneer. Malik, though smaller, held on with fierce determination, shielding the clothes.

“Let go, you brat!” Daryl snarled, his eyes glinting. He twisted the rack violently, trying to wrench it from Malik’s grasp.

This wasn’t just about the fabrics anymore. This was a physical battle for dignity, for truth, unfolding in the glittering, indifferent heart of the city. The elegant hotel lobby had become a brutal arena.
