Chapter 17: Sunrise Over the Harbor

I was still reeling from Nora’s revelation, the USB drive warm in my pocket, when Harrison Cross himself materialized beside me. I was leaving the policy office after my shift, trying to appear inconspicuous.

“Julian,” he said, his voice surprisingly calm, almost friendly. It was a practiced calm, the kind that preceded a storm.

I stopped, turning slowly. “Councilman.”

“Lovely day, isn’t it?” he remarked, gesturing vaguely at the bustling City Hall lobby. People streamed past, oblivious to the predator standing next to me.

My hand instinctively went to my pocket, touching the flash drive.

Harrison’s eyes flickered, as if he sensed the hidden object. “Tell me, Julian, are you quite happy with your current position?”

“I’m managing, Councilman,” I replied carefully. “It’s stable work.”

“Stable,” he repeated, a thin smile on his lips. “Yes, stability is a precious commodity, isn’t it? Especially for someone with your… history.”

He leaned in, his voice dropping. “I heard a whisper, Julian. Something about you dabbling in ‘internal municipal files.’ Not on official business, of course. Just… browsing.”

My breath caught. How did he know? Nora had said he suspected something.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.

Harrison chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “Oh, I think you do. And let me tell you, Julian, administrative misconduct is a very serious charge. Especially when it comes from a clerk with a documented history of financial irresponsibility. Remember that little ‘bankruptcy’ of yours?”

He paused, letting the words sink in. “It would be such a shame to see you lose your current job. And your pension, of course. All that hard work, rebuilding your life, gone. Just like that.” He snapped his fingers.

My stomach churned. He was threatening my livelihood, my family’s future. Again.

“And who would believe you, Julian?” Harrison continued, his voice laced with contempt. “A failed lawyer, a bankrupt clerk, trying to make accusations against a sitting city councilman? A man of my standing?”

He straightened, adjusting his tie. “Your word is worth nothing, Julian. Absolutely nothing. So, I suggest you think very carefully about what you choose to ‘uncover.’ Some secrets are best left buried, wouldn’t you agree?”

He clapped me on the shoulder, a physical assertion of dominance, before turning and walking away, leaving me standing alone in the crowded lobby, feeling as though the air had been sucked out of the room. The USB drive felt like a live wire against my thigh.
