Chapter 17: Sunrise Over the Harbor

Ms. Henderson, the housing referee, slowly lifted her gaze from the document, her eyes fixed on Harrison. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the rapid clicks of camera shutters.

She cleared her throat. “Councilman Cross,” she said, her voice cold and cutting. “Is this document genuine?”

Harrison could only stammer, “It’s… it’s an old record. It’s irrelevant. We have a valid lease!”

“Irrelevant?” Ms. Henderson retorted, her voice rising. She held up the certified deed. “This document, stamped by the State Archives, clearly establishes the original trust. And within this trust, we find Clause 14B.”

She began to read, her voice resonating through the room, each word a hammer blow against Harrison’s claims: ” ‘Should any designated property administrator, including but not limited to any appointed trustee or manager, attempt to convert the residential units within this trust parcel into commercial campaign assets, or to materially alter the original intent of the residential provisions for personal gain, said administrative management rights shall immediately revert to the original grantor’s blood heirs without requiring a court order or further legal process.’ ”

She looked up, her gaze sweeping over the assembled room, landing finally on me. “Mr. Julian Reed, as the grandson of the original grantor, your claim as the blood heir is hereby acknowledged by this document.”

Another ripple of shock went through the room. The reporters leaned forward, their faces alight. Harrison’s attorney was frantically whispering in his ear, but Harrison just stared straight ahead, his face utterly devoid of color.

“Furthermore,” Ms. Henderson continued, “the testimony provided, combined with the evidence of rent payments diverted to campaign funds—specifically the $2,400 monthly payments cited by Ms. Evelyn Cross, totaling $86,400 over three years—and the altered lease agreements, clearly constitutes a violation of Clause 14B.”

She paused, taking a deep breath. “Therefore, by the inherent terms of this trust, Councilman Harrison Cross’s administrative management rights over this property expired five years ago, when he began these illicit financial conversions. He has had no legal authority to collect rent, issue eviction notices, or manage this property since that time.”

She slammed her gavel down with a resounding crack that made everyone jump. “The eviction order against Mr. Julian Reed for unit 4B is hereby voided, effective immediately!”

She looked at Harrison, her expression scathing. “Councilman Cross, you are stripped of all property administrative authority for this entire residential block, effective immediately. All current leases held under your fraudulent claim are hereby suspended, pending further review.”

Then, the final, crushing blow. “And due to the systematic siphoning of rent money into a political campaign fund, this court also orders an immediate freeze on all funds within the ‘Vote Cross’ campaign escrow account, pending a full audit and restitution for all illegally collected rent, totaling $86,400, to be returned directly into an escrow account held for Mr. Julian Reed.”

Harrison slumped in his chair, his head bowed. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire world crumble before his eyes, not in some distant future, but right here, right now, in front of everyone.
