Chapter 17: Sunrise Over the Harbor

The crisp autumn air bit at my cheeks as I hurried through the alley behind City Hall. It was lunch break, and the usual hustle of clerks and politicians was spilling onto the sidewalk. But I had a different appointment.

Nora Montgomery was already there, leaning against a graffiti-covered brick wall, looking like a sparrow trying to hide in a flock of pigeons. She wore a heavy coat, her head down.

“Nora,” I said softly, approaching her.

She flinched, then looked up, her eyes wide with fear. “Mr. Reed. I can’t stay long. Harrison has me on a tight leash today.”

“I understand,” I replied, glancing around nervously. “Thank you for meeting me.”

She reached into her coat pocket, her hand trembling slightly, and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive. It was sleek, new, and clearly encrypted.

“This is it,” she whispered, pressing it into my palm. Her fingers were cold against mine. “Five years of his internal emails. All the land registration correspondence. Everything.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. This was the proof David needed. The smoking gun.

“Five years?” I asked, my voice barely audible. “Why that far back?”

“Because that’s when he really started to solidify his ‘ownership’ claims,” Nora explained, her gaze fixed on the brick wall opposite. “He inherited the administrator role from his father, but his father always respected the trust. Harrison… he had bigger ambitions.”

“He knew my grandfather owned the land, didn’t he?” I pressed. “He knew about the trust when I applied for municipal housing assistance three years ago.”

Nora finally met my gaze, her eyes brimming with a mixture of regret and resolve. “Yes. He knew. He had me ‘reclassify’ the property as a ‘strategic municipal asset’ in his private ledgers. So it wouldn’t show up as a private family trust when you applied for assistance.”

A wave of nausea washed over me. He had used my vulnerability, my desperation for housing after my bankruptcy, against me. He knew I had a claim to this property, and he deliberately hid it, while simultaneously taking my cash rent payments and funneling them into his political machine.

“You’re risking everything, Nora,” I told her, clutching the USB drive.

She gave a faint, bitter smile. “I know. But I can’t keep watching him exploit people. Especially not with a pregnant woman involved. He gets away with too much because people are afraid.”

A car pulled up at the end of the alley. Nora stiffened.

“I have to go,” she said, her voice urgent. “Be careful. He’s furious. He knows something is up. He just doesn’t know what.”

She turned and hurried away, blending into the lunchtime crowd. I stood there, the small USB drive a heavy weight in my hand, a silent promise of justice—and an immense danger.
