Chapter 12: Epilogue — Two Years Later

The last military telegraph confirmation finally clattered in, giving us the flight plan and medical team assignment for Thomas. He would be transported to a hospital in London, then home to the States as soon as he was stable enough.

The immediate crisis had passed, replaced by a fragile hope.

Julian rose from the armchair, his movements slow and deliberate. He walked to the foyer desk where I still sat, gathering the various documents.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy brass ring, keys dangling from it. The keys to Harbor Light Manor.

“Here,” he said, his voice hoarse, extending them to me. “They are yours, as they always were.”

He then reached for a pen and a blank sheet of paper. “I will sign a formal confession, Eleanor. To the town council, to anyone. I will admit to everything. My deceit, my lies, my theft of your peace.”

He looked at me, his eyes devoid of any pride, only profound surrender. “You can cast me out now. Press charges. Have me arrested. I deserve it all.”

I looked at the heavy keys in his hand, then at his defeated face. I thought of the freezing rain, the locked door, the accusations, the public humiliation he had inflicted upon me. The urge for vengeance was a powerful, bitter taste.

But then I thought of Thomas, lying wounded in a field hospital. I thought of Beatrice’s quiet courage. And I thought of the future, a future where healing was possible.

I gently pushed his hand, and the keys, back onto the desk.

“No, Julian,” I said, my voice soft but firm. “Hatred will not bring peace to anyone. It won’t heal Thomas, and it won’t heal us.”

He stared at me, uncomprehending. “What… what do you mean?”

“This house is mine,” I stated, touching the deed. “But you will not be cast out into the cold.”

Beatrice stepped forward, a hopeful look on her face.

“The gatehouse cottage,” I continued, gesturing vaguely towards the small building near the entrance to the manor. “It’s empty. You can stay there.”

Julian’s breath hitched. He looked between me and the keys on the desk, his mind struggling to grasp the mercy I was offering.

“We will focus on bringing Thomas back home safely,” I explained. “That is all that matters now. After that… we will figure out the rest, together.”

The heavy armor of past grudges, the very thing that had weighed us all down, began to lift, replaced by a fragile, unexpected act of grace.
