Julian stood frozen, his face devoid of color, the dangling telephone receiver swinging idly by its cord. The chaplain’s disembodied voice still murmured from it, a ghost in the room.

He looked at me, his eyes wide, then at the floor, then back at me. The bitter argument, the accusations, the insults – they evaporated in the face of this stark, terrifying news.

“He… he needs blood,” Julian stammered, his voice breaking. He sank onto the nearest armchair, his hands covering his face. “And I… I can’t even give him that. I’m utterly useless.”

His shoulders began to shake. A raw, guttural sob tore from his chest. The proud captain, the charismatic manipulator, was utterly shattered, reduced to a weeping man.

Beatrice rushed to him, placing a comforting hand on his arm, but he was beyond solace. He rocked back and forth, consumed by grief and a profound, visible helplessness.

My own shock was quickly replaced by a surge of fierce, protective determination. This wasn’t Julian’s game anymore. This was about Thomas. My nephew.

I moved with purpose, picking up the still-dangling receiver. The chaplain was still on the line, repeating the urgent need for a blood-type match and next-of-kin authorization.

“This is Eleanor Gable,” I said, my voice cutting through the haze of grief. “Thomas Gable-O’Connell is my nephew. My brother, Arthur Gable, was his biological father.”

A pause on the line. Then, the chaplain’s voice, slightly clearer, sounded surprised. “Miss Gable? You are next-of-kin?”

“Yes,” I affirmed. “I have the paternity documents right here. I also have high-priority War Shipping Administration telephone codes. I need to arrange immediate medical transport priorities for Private Thomas Gable-O’Connell. Tell me exactly what needs to be done. What forms, what authorizations, what blood types are needed.”

My mind raced, categorizing, prioritizing. All my years of managing complex logistics, of making swift decisions under pressure, kicked into gear. The house, the quarrel, Julian’s broken pride – they all faded into insignificance. Only Thomas mattered now.
