Chapter 17: The Tailor’s Window

My hands moved quickly, expertly, fitting the triplets into their custom-made traditional garments. The silk was a deep indigo, shimmering under the soft light of my living room. It was Mama Amaka’s finest, leftover from her last big commission years ago. I’d spent countless nights stitching and tailoring, pouring my love and defiance into every seam.

“Hold still, Kael,” I murmured, adjusting the intricate embroidery on his collar. He fidgeted, eager to play.

Chidi sat across the room, his laptop humming, a stack of legal documents spread around him. The encounter with Chief Omo’s enforcers had lit a fire under him. He hadn’t slept, methodically building his case against Tunde.

“I found it, Nia,” Chidi announced, his voice tight with grim satisfaction. He held up a scanned document, a digital image on his screen.

I walked over, the silk wrapper of Zane’s outfit trailing behind me. It was the original land registry document for the downtown property Tunde had bought five years ago. My eyes instantly sought the signatures.

“There,” Chidi pointed. “Mama Amaka’s mark. It’s an explicit forgery, Nia. The real signature from her medical records, from her old business permits… they don’t match. Not even close.”

He brought up a side-by-side comparison. Mama Amaka’s true signature, precise and firm despite her age, next to the shaky, crude imitation on the deed. The difference was stark, undeniable. Tunde had clearly hurried, his greed overriding any attempt at believable mimicry.

“He signed away her property,” I whispered, a fresh wave of grief and fury washing over me. “To build his first tower. The foundation of his ’empire’ built on a lie and her stolen identity.”

“It’s all here,” Chidi said, gesturing to the screen. “The original land title, the fraudulent loan agreement, even the bank statements showing the funds hitting Adebayo Holdings’ account. I’ve compiled everything into a digital evidence dossier.”

He leaned back, rubbing his tired eyes. “This dossier, combined with the Chief Omo ledger information, proves Tunde’s entire financial structure is a house of cards built on fraud and illegal debt. And Mama Amaka’s property is caught in the middle.”

“He knew he was in too deep with Chief Omo,” I mused, the pieces of the puzzle fitting into a complete, horrifying picture. “He must have been desperate for more collateral, so he just threw Mama’s shop into the mix without a second thought.”

“Exactly,” Chidi confirmed. “The legal title for Mama’s shop still lists her as the owner. But because Tunde used her name on other forged documents, and she’s linked to him through these underground debts, Chief Omo will consider it fair game if Tunde defaults.”

I looked down at Kael, who was now patiently waiting for me to tie his agbada. His face, so innocent, so full of Tunde’s features, was a stark reminder of what was at stake.

“This changes everything,” I said, my voice hardening. “It’s not just Tunde’s reputation. It’s Mama’s legacy. It’s our family’s name. And it’s our children’s future, caught between his lies and Chief Omo’s brutal justice.”

Chidi nodded. “We have the proof. We have the motive. Now, we just need the right moment to expose it all.”

I tightened the last sash on Leo’s garment. “The right moment,” I echoed, my eyes fixed on my sons. “Is tonight.”
