Chapter 12: The Birthday Text

The ballroom erupted in pandemonium. Gasps turned into shouts, questions into accusations. Richard DeWitt, still frozen in disbelief, pointed wildly at the glowing words on the screen, then at me.

“She put her up to this! It’s slander! She’s trying to ruin me!” he shrieked, his polished facade completely shattered.

At that moment, a figure stepped through the chaos, moving with a calm authority that immediately commanded attention. Detective Marcus Brody, now clearly identifying himself as Chicago PD, strode onto the stage. He held up a hand, silencing the immediate roar.

“Richard DeWitt,” Brody’s voice cut through the noise, clear and authoritative. “You are under arrest.”

Richard’s eyes bulged. “Arrest? For what?!”

“For historic fraud, extortion, and in light of new evidence,” Brody announced, gesturing to the glowing message on the screen, “for potential domestic violence charges, in connection with the disappearance of Victoria Albright.”

The crowd gasped anew. The journalists, sensing the magnitude of the story, pushed closer, their cameras flashing.

Brody produced handcuffs. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Richard recoiled, stumbling backward. “You can’t do this! I’m Richard DeWitt! I have connections!”

“Those connections won’t help you tonight, Mr. DeWitt,” Brody said, his grip firm. He took Richard’s arm, turning him around.

As the cold steel clicked around Richard’s wrists, his face was a mask of utter defeat and fury. He was no longer the all-powerful landlord; he was just a man in handcuffs, caught in a public spectacle of his own making.

My eyes met Claire Danforth’s across the room. She offered a subtle nod, a flicker of approval. The tables had not just turned; they had been smashed. Social media feeds were already exploding, reporters were shouting into phones, and the images of Richard DeWitt, handcuffed on stage with Victoria’s accusation glowing behind him, were going viral nationally.

The flashbulbs kept firing, capturing every agonizing moment of his downfall. Richard DeWitt, the untouchable titan of Chicago real estate, was now just another perp.
