After Bankrupting Her Design Firm, Elena's Predatory Landlord and Ex-Husband Demands $1.5 Million or Eviction at a Charity Gala—Until a Secret UV Letter Exposes His Darkest Crime.
The gallery was almost empty, hushed and cool, filled with abstract sculptures and minimalist paintings. Victoria Albright stood before a canvas of muted grays, her back to me. She was older than I remembered from Richard’s wedding photos, but her posture still carried an elegant defiance.
“Elena,” she said, turning slowly. Her eyes, the same piercing blue as Richard’s, held a weariness I hadn’t expected. “Thank you for coming.”
I clutched the heavy antique portrait frame. “Why did you send me this, Victoria?”
She gestured to a small, secluded bench. “Richard won’t like it that we’re talking. But you’re in the crosshairs now, aren’t you?”
I nodded. “He’s trying to bankrupt me. And worse, blackball me from any future work.”
“He did the same to me, in his own way,” Victoria replied, her voice soft but firm. “I was his partner, Elena. In his first real estate firm. Before he decided he didn’t need a partner, or a wife.”
“What’s in the frame?” I pressed, holding it out.
Victoria took the portrait from me, her fingers tracing the ornate wood. “Years ago, when our divorce was getting ugly, I knew he was hiding things. Financial irregularities. Property seizures that were… less than legal.”
She paused, her gaze distant. “He was cutting corners, intimidating small business owners, buying out their leases for pennies on the dollar through shell companies. I started documenting everything.”
“You have evidence?” My voice was barely a whisper.
“I tried to expose him then,” she admitted, her expression pained. “But he had too much power. Too many connections. I couldn’t face the fight, not while he was threatening to take everything, even my peace of mind.”
She carefully turned the portrait over, revealing the cardboard backing. “I hid a written document, detailing those transactions, inside the canvas backing. I sealed it tight. It lists every illegal property seizure, every shell company Richard used, every manipulated contract.”
“It’s not just about money, Elena,” Victoria continued, her eyes meeting mine. “He can be vicious. When I tried to leave him, he made threats. Not just financial. Threats that made me fear for my safety.” She tapped the backing. “I even wrote something else, a warning, just in case. Something only certain light could reveal.”
“A warning?” I repeated, my breath catching in my throat.
She nodded. “I knew this frame would resurface one day. I knew someone like you, someone he wanted to crush, would find it. It’s time his secrets came to light.”
