Chapter 12: The Birthday Text

The fluorescent lights of my studio hummed, casting a sterile glow over stacks of old blueprints and property deeds. It was well past midnight, the city outside a quiet canvas of shimmering lights. Claire’s words echoed in my mind: “Every landlord has skeletons… especially the ones who build empires on eviction notices.”

I traced a finger over the faded lines of my studio’s original structural plans, dating back to the 1920s. Richard’s building, the DeWitt Tower, was old, a labyrinth of shell corporations and obscure easements. Finding a lease compliance violation felt like searching for a needle in a skyscraper.

My phone buzzed. A text from my assistant, Maya: “Package arrived for you after hours. Signed for it. Victoria Albright.”

Victoria Albright. Richard’s first ex-wife. The name sent a chill down my spine. She hadn’t been in Chicago in years, not since their notoriously bitter divorce years ago. What could she possibly want with me?

A delivery tag was still clipped to the large, flat box propped against my office door. It was wrapped in plain brown paper, surprisingly light for its size. My hands trembled slightly as I tore away the wrapping.

Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was an antique framed portrait. It depicted a woman from the turn of the century, her gaze serene, almost haunting. The frame itself was ornate, dark wood with intricate carvings, clearly valuable. It felt out of place, a relic from another era.

No note. No explanation. Just the portrait, and the name of Richard’s first ex-wife on the delivery slip.

Why would Victoria send me this? Was it a warning? A trap? My mind raced, trying to connect Victoria’s sudden appearance with Richard’s aggressive campaign.
