Chapter 12: Cold Silence at the Pier

Admiral Avery came to a rigid halt directly in front of me. His uniform was immaculate, his posture unyielding. His eyes, though firm, held a deep respect.

He brought his hand up in a crisp, sharp military salute. It was held perfectly, precisely, for three long seconds. The kind of salute reserved for true heroes.

The silence in the ballroom was profound, almost reverent.

“Captain Oakridge,” Admiral Avery said, his voice loud and clear, resonating through the hushed hall. He used my true name, the name I had been disowned for, the name they had tried to erase.

“On behalf of a grateful nation,” he continued, his gaze unwavering, “I thank you for your selfless courage and extraordinary leadership during the *SS Atlantic Sentinel* disaster.”

He paused, his expression softening almost imperceptibly. “Your quick actions saved twenty-four lives. But we mourn the one life lost, the young deckhand, Samuel Brooks, who stood his ground until the very end.”

My throat tightened. Samuel. The wound was still raw, a phantom ache.

From my purse, I pulled the heavy, charred ship log. Its edges were blackened, the paper brittle and smoke-stained. I handed it to Admiral Avery.

“This log,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hand, “shows Samuel stayed at his post to save the engines. Because Julian’s firm cut the emergency extinguishers. All for $400,000 in unpaid premiums.”

Admiral Avery nodded slowly, his face hardening. Two federal agents, who had been discreetly waiting in the foyer, stepped forward. They moved swiftly, purposefully, toward Julian.

Julian, still standing in the side study doorway, watched them approach. His face was a mask of terror. He didn’t resist as they took his arms and escorted him out, his protests strangled in his throat.

Harrison Oakridge, his face streaked with tears and champagne, collapsed onto a nearby leather chair. He was completely alone. Every benefactor, every friend, every socialite in Rhode Island turned their backs, their faces etched with disgust. His dynasty was over.
