My Husband Vanished for 5 Years While I Paid His Sick Mother's $14k Monthly Care — Then He Returned With a 22-Year-Old Savior to Steal My Estate
The scent of jasmine and evening dew drifted through the open car window. I sat in my parked car outside Evelyn’s new cottage, the engine off, the quiet hum of crickets filling the air. It was a moment of rare peace, a sliver of normalcy I hadn’t known in years.
My phone vibrated on the passenger seat, illuminating the dim interior. Julian’s public defender. Again.
I picked it up.
“Mrs. Croft,” the lawyer’s voice was tired, resigned. “Mr. Croft would like to speak with you directly. He understands if you’re hesitant, but he believes it’s important.”
I didn’t answer right away. I just listened to the distant sounds of the Pasadena night.
“He wants to know,” the lawyer continued, “if any of it was real to you. The marriage. The years. Or if you were just… waiting for the estate.”
The question hung in the air, a final, desperate attempt to shift blame, to make me complicit in his narrative of a loveless, transactional marriage.
I pressed the mute button on my phone. The lawyer’s voice stopped, replaced by the faint, muffled sound of Julian’s breathing on the line. I could almost picture him, wherever he was, waiting for an answer, for some validation, some absolution.
Three seconds passed. The crickets chirped louder.
Then, I pressed the end call button. The screen went dark. The silence of the night enveloped me once more, complete and unbroken.
