My Husband Vanished for 5 Years While I Paid His Sick Mother's $14k Monthly Care — Then He Returned With a 22-Year-Old Savior to Steal My Estate
The smell of old coffee and stale croissants clung to my clothes as I left the diner. My phone buzzed in my hand. It was an email from Marcus Fain, the subject line screaming “URGENT FINANCIAL REVIEW.”
I opened it in my car, parked under the hot Burbank sun. The body of the email was brief, formal, and utterly chilling. Effective immediately, all my access to Croft Media’s operational accounts had been revoked. A mandatory audit, it claimed, had uncovered “discrepancies” related to my management during Julian’s absence.
My stomach dropped. This was Round 1 of the escalation, just as Ethan had predicted.
I drove straight to the studio. The main gate was open, but when I tried to use my keycard on the executive building door, it simply beeped, a harsh, final refusal. My card was deactivated.
A security guard, a new face I didn’t recognize, stepped out from a small booth. He avoided my gaze.
“Mrs. Croft,” he said, clearing his throat. “I’m sorry, but my instructions are clear. No unauthorized personnel.”
“I am Mrs. Croft,” I stated, my voice tight. “I run this studio.”
He shook his head, looking uncomfortable. “I have orders directly from Mr. Fain. He said, ‘Especially not Mrs. Croft.'”
Just then, Marcus Fain’s luxury sedan pulled into the parking lot. He exited the car, immaculate in a tailored suit, a thin smile playing on his lips. Sierra was in the passenger seat, already stepping out, her sunglasses reflecting the bright sunlight. She gave me a dismissive glance.
Marcus approached, holding a stack of legal papers. The air felt heavy.
“Clara,” he said, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine concern. “We need to talk.”
He handed me the documents. The top page was a court summons, an emergency financial order. My name was at the top, followed by the words: “Alleged Misappropriation of Studio Funds.”
“Julian has filed a formal complaint,” Marcus continued, watching my face for a reaction. “He claims you embezzled $350,000 from Croft Media during his incapacitation.”
My jaw clenched. “$350,000? While you were funneling $420,000 to Sierra’s company?”
Marcus’s smile didn’t waver. “Those are entirely separate matters. Julian is simply trying to stabilize the studio’s finances after your, ah, unconventional management decisions.”
Sierra walked up, leaning against Julian’s car, her arms crossed. “It’s a mess, Clara. Really, you should have known better.”
“My unconventional decisions kept this studio afloat,” I retorted, my voice rising. “They kept Evelyn in her facility, they kept the lights on, and they kept your so-called ‘savior’ in five-star hotels while he was supposedly lost.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Be careful with your accusations, Clara. Legal matters are quite serious.”
He made a show of patting his pockets, then pulled out another envelope. “And this. This is an eviction notice for the Bel-Air property. Julian will be returning home soon, and he requires his primary residence. As you know, the house is solely in his name.”
My vision blurred for a moment. The house, our home for years, suddenly stripped away. It was a cruel, calculated move to leave me utterly adrift.
“He’s moved out of the main house,” Sierra chirped, oblivious or uncaring. “He’s at the Beverly Hills Hotel right now. We’re getting things sorted.”
A red sports car, one I’d never seen before, pulled up to the curb. Julian was in the passenger seat. He looked at me, then quickly away, his gaze lingering on Sierra. He didn’t meet my eyes.
He was leaving me, not just financially stranded, but also physically homeless, while he moved into a luxury hotel with the woman who helped him steal everything. The reality of his betrayal solidified into a cold, hard fact.
